Neither the Democratic party nor the Republican party are the cause of the economic crisis that now confronts our nation. Both parties are equally responsible for the crisis in which we now find ourselves. This problem has been festering for three to four decades and only now has become so serious that policies once used to temporarily resolve it are no longer effective in dealing with it. These policies have only been designed to treat the symptoms of our problems, but do not effectively deal with the underlying causes of our nation's serious economic crisis.
A prime example of the stagnant mindset is the our federal government's recent economic stimulus program, which only offers Americans false hope. How does trillions of dollars of unsustainable government spending over an indefinite period into the future solve our nation’s economic crisis? It only increases our national debt at a time when it was our reliance on credit and debt that precipitated the problem in the first place. It’s like throwing gasoline on a fire in an effort to extinguish the flames. Does it really make any sense to substantially increase the debt that will have to be paid by future generations? The truth be told, current economic recovery efforts are just a continuation of an ongoing Ponzi scheme, which has been promoted by politicians of both political parties over the last several decades. They have told and continue to assure the citizens of this nation that we can have it all without regard to who is actually going pay for these excesses when the bills finally become due. None of our leaders have the political courage or will to do what is necessary to balance federal budget.
The real cause of America's economic crisis is our inability with live within our means. These problems are of our own making. Real solutions to the current economic crisis will require substantial changes in how America conducts it’s business at home and abroad. There are no quick, painless solutions to these problems. Any sustainable solution to our economic problems must substantially reduce our nation’s huge trade deficit. That would result in the injection of hundreds of billions of dollars into the U.S. economy, which would otherwise be diverted overseas. In order to accomplish this task, we need to restore the wealth producing sectors of our economy, which will allow our nation to once again create the wealth it requires for sustainable economic growth. Until our representatives in Washington make a concerted effort to restore the wealth producing sectors of our national economy, the problems that currently plague our nation’s economy will only worsen.

Some $50,000 went to support 34 dancers in a production of "Swan Lake," which was performed in early November by Ballet Arizona. A private company received $250,000 to install eight prefabricated concrete restroom buildings in the Coronado National Forest. University researchers received $450,000 to study turtle ants to shed light on the evolution of division of labor.

When this first passed, I remember posting how the 'Stimulus' sure looked a lot like a quid pro quo for the teachers' and public employees' unions who helped the Democrats so much in the 2008 elections. That the 800 billion would wind up being little more than a stop gap funding bill for states with huge deficit budgets. I also remember being pilloried by its supporters for not believing the claims that the money would be targeted primarily toward infrastructure and 'shovel ready', long term jobs that would kick start the private sector.
It's certainly was one occasion where I would have been happy to have been wrong

I agree, kudos to the Star but is it too little, too late? Time will tell.
The Republican and Democrat Parties are not exactly the same. There have been some spend-crazy Republicans but not all by a long shot. Former President Bush was wrong to spend so much and have a socialist bailout bill, but President Obama goes much, much further when it comes to overspending and handing out money indiscriminately.
The Tea Parties are reforming the GOP, but is there any hope for the DNC? I doubt it.
The fiscally responsible half of the Republican Party can pull the US back from the brink of disaster, if we can weed out the RINOs and have independents on our side to help us. The 2010 election is the key.
Most people who comment here know how they vote and why, and the country is split and polorized. Job creation is a small baby step in the right direction if it budges our empire of consumption and debt away from the borrow and spend our way to prosperity kick.
What we need is a giant stride that will restore our production to some equivalence with our consumption. I have the uneasy feeling that some, perhaps most, of the jobs created won't help us to achieve that balance.
To paraphrase author Peter D. Schiff: borrowing to pay for consumption is the way rich nations become poor.

1. The one TRILLION dollars put into this "stimulus" package is money we don't have. It has to be paid back someday.
2. The only way it can be paid back is by taxing people’s income in the future.
3. If this money is simply squandered on more government programs that pay no taxes and produce nothing, it can't be paid back. Government, which sucks up wealth, will grow. Business, which produces wealth, will shrink.
This experiment has been tried over and over around the world with disastrous results. Do we really want to go in that direction?

At the bottom of all of this is the beginning of the end of political correctness. "It's not nice to deny someone a home loan just because they can't afford it. They're probably victims of our unfair system!". Or "Even though this guy isn't really qualified we'll give him the job anyway because we need to boost his self esteem" and on and on. Reality exists whether we like it or not. What is happening now is a long overdue jolt back to the real world.

This entire program is akin to a Ponzi scheme. Americans have been hoodwinked. The bottom line is most Americans do not understand basic math and how to handle money. Then you get politicians putting their spin on the Stimulus bill and you get a confused electorate. Once everyone gets over the "George Bush" hangover and realizes that his replacement is an amateur we can get about getting officials running our country who are decision makers.

The stimulus fund is proving to be no more than a slush fund to provide "walkin' around" money to democrat shills and those whose votes they wish to purchase in the next election.

Tim and Rhonda--GREAT REPORTING! I am totally surprised that you were allowed to print this knowing what the ADS editorial folks usually hold back. Yes, many in Washington have tried to tell us about all the wastefull "earmarks" that the "stimulus" was funding but the media normally won't criticize anything that the Adminstration is responsible for--or doesn't work--or wastes. It goes on "deaf ears".
T. and R., how bout doing another investigative story?
Let's hear more about the 1000- plus emails that were hacked explaining how "global warming" (climate change) is a total farce... These were environmental scientists that held back crucial information from the WORLD. This is being reported on cable but nowhere else. If you investigate and report about this one, I will truly be a convert...

Giffords is trying to paint a rosey picture ,to get re- elected. Drive your limo up and down Tucson 's streets! Every block has an empty store front or more!. All they did is pay criminals for committing crimes with no punishment at our expense! You've done nothing!!

Remember everybody, Giffords voted against the stimulus before voting for it.
She voted for it after it was sufficiently larded up.

Data used to support the massive stimulus spending is as reliable as that used to perpetuate the global climate fear.

$$$ for Senior Citizen's arts class? Is that really a necessity or luxury? They'll be laid to rest sooner or later so why invest in stimulating their creativity with an art class? I'd rather see that $$$ go to children in a local elementary school, give them something to do so they won't be out tagging up buildings and buying drugs from the dealers.

Pricilla,
Why invest medical resources in old people? They are just going to die soon anyway.
Why invest in socialized medicine? all those people which don't meet my high standards will get medical care... I don't want that, I want them all to die so only people like me will be left. Then we can build a wall to keep the rest out and we can all be happy in our comfortable, gated communities.

I'm talking about the art class for senior citizens that is mentioned in the article.
However, you're talking about healthcare and illegal immigration, so why respond when you're going to change the topic?
Did you read the article? My comment is in reference to the statement in the article.
