I know that this paper doesn’t care about any other sports outside of Tucson, especially if the school isn’t a 4A or above school. However, there is a school 80 miles east of Tucson, that gets and reads this paper that also has a playoff game this weekend. The playoff game is the STATE FINALS for 2A. Let’s go WILLCOX COWBOYS!
If the paper was doing some reporting outside their 25 mile circle they would know that this team was 2-8 last year, got a new coach and are now 8-2, having beat the #1 and #5 teams in state, both of which are private schools.
Now I know all you Tucson people are going to say something like who cares about the little/rural schools, well all of the people in the rural schools that read this paper do. If it wasn’t for the Arizona Wildcat articles I wouldn’t even read this paper.

#1: I agree with you. The ARIZONA Daily Star should do a better job of covering sports in ARIZONA, specifically Southern ARIZONA. They are weak in girl's/women's sports coverage as well. So, it could be worse...if the Willcox girl's basketball team won the intergalactic championship 100 years in a row, ADS wouldn't even know or care about it.
#2: Right on, right on, right on...
#3+: I hope your favorite teams do well, but...
Go Palo Verde Titans!
Go Cienega Bobcats!
Go Santa Rita Eagles!
Do your best Sabino Sabercats!
Thanks for playing Canyon del Oro Dorados!

Good luck to all the Southern AZ teams still competing in the playoffs. Now - would a 5A-1 team finally step up to the plate and win a championship at the highest classification? Let's end the drought next year!

Any and all Southern Arizona teams--Good Luck! I agree we all root for our specific teams when it is Tucson vs Tucson. But when we match up versus a Phoenix team, everyone in Tucson and surrounding areas always root for Tucson! Also I agree Andy Morales is the real deal, he has great insight and is not afraid to stand up for the truth!
Finally--Go U of A!!!!!!

The Mingus Marauders can be beat, but it takes a creative passing offensive scheme. You cannot expect to beat them with vanilla running and passing attack. They will shut down the run, and then the passing plays will be anticipated and ineffective. Two years ago I watched Flagstaff High School coached by Eric Afholter (ex USC,GB Packer)lead a much inferior team against Mingus. He kept them off balance with his offensive play calling and almost pulled off the big upset. If Coach Scurran plays it conservative, or runs smash mouth football, Santa Rita will lose. My advice to coach, open it up and be unpredictable. Good Luck to Santa Rita

Santa Rita got beat pretty bad by Mingus 2 years ago, but that was their very first year under Scurran and it was pouring rain. Should be a much more even game this time around.
#2 I disagree, Flying Spaghetti Monster is the true savior.

Mingus will not allow more than 10 points tonight. SR has not seen a defense like this all year. More of the same from two years ago in a butt whoopin, rain or not. I think the score is more like 28-10. Go Marauders!

Going to have to completely disagree with the thoughts on tucsoncitizen.com and whoever the hell Andy Morales is. That site is awful, especially the high school sports coverage. All he seems to do is steal stats from maxpreps or this paper (which I'm not a huge fan of either, by the way) and toss them up on a site and take credit for it. Not only that, but the writing is atrocious. That site sucks, and this one is only slightly better.
The only credit I give is that this paper did a tremendous job with the Empire team. Its not like the citizen actually covered any Willcox games. Just stole the stats and threw up some awful predictions.

Interesting that Drew's and Tom's last names start with M...as in Morales? I never said this paper was any good. It isn't. I can't stomach reading it. I just said that the other one is equally as bad. No quotes, almost no game stories at the citizen. a giant list of stats and scores and thats about it. The writing is all first-person nonsense. Now can we all just agree that they both stink? I used to work at a newspaper in Missou and the state of them here is just sad.

To each his own Dale.
I know for a fact the schools love his stuff.
And the Star should take credit for posting only Tucson stats how?
You need to get out more.

I agree, Andy's site is great.
His slide shows kick also.
His all-star teams are more in depth than what we will see on Sunday...
Isn't "Dale" the one who fought it out with Adam Hall's dad?
He was defending the paper then....
At any rate. Good luck southern Arizona teams!

Quick Dale, in what week of the season did the Star even mention Cody Woody?
Thought so.
