It was a time of shame for us as we were told to stand by, and let North Viet Nam come into South Viet Nam to take over. Killing millions as they did so. As we stood down, and left people with their children begging at the fences for us to take their children with us to save them. Some of them did get away by boats. Many of them sank with hundreds of people on them. 5-year-old Hung Ba Le was on one of those boats years ago that made it. His father had been a South Vietnamese navy officer.
His family escaped on a fishing trawler. Le’s father led the vessel and its 400 refugees out to sea on April 30, 1975. Numerous times, the younger Le said, the refugees were refused assistance from passing ships.
As Le’s father navigated the boat out to sea, he was leaving behind more than his native country: His four oldest children, living in the family’s hometown of Hue, were unable meet the rest of the family before the trawler departed.
After days at sea, sleep-deprived and hungry, Le, three other siblings, his parents and the other refugees were taken aboard the USS Barbour County, a ship participating in Operation Frequent Wind — the evacuation of foreigners and South Vietnamese from Saigon.
The Barbour County took the refugees to the Philippines.
“The cool ocean breeze could not comfort the wave of sorrow in the heart of this Vietnamese refugee,” the elder Le wrote in his memoir.
The Le family eventually made their way to Camp Pendleton, Calif., where they were kept in a refugee camp for several weeks.
They soon found sponsorship from an American family and made the trek to northern Virginia, where they would eventually settle.
With no money, Le’s father worked various jobs to support the family before settling into a job at Giant Food, a supermarket chain.
“We had some great help along the way from our sponsors,” the younger Le recalled.
Although the family’s journey to gain U.S. citizenship lasted eight years, Le describes his experience in America as one of little struggle.
“I always felt lucky to come to America when I did,” he said.
In 1983, the naturalization process concluded and the family’s four oldest children were permitted to join the family.
With a family deeply rooted in naval heritage, Le said that as a teenager getting accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy was his goal.
“I was never pressured over the years from my father to do so,” he said Tuesday as his ship steamed toward its scheduled Saturday port call to Da Nang with USS Blue Ridge. “But [I] enjoyed being able to follow in his footsteps.”
This week, he returns to the land of his birth for the first time. And it is a U.S. Navy ship — the guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen that he commands.
Many thanks to David J. Carter of Stars and Stripes.

Insurance agent writes So, I say to you insurance bashers, the next time you have a loss or disaster and have to call the insurance company for help, be thankful that there is someone there to help and advise you.
The next time you have a death in the family, don't expect a life-insurance agent to show up with a check, the way it used to happen. Instead, you will receive a checkbook from the insurance company, so they can hold on to your money as long as possible. It's not that they want the money, though; they just want to turn the beneficiary into a customer. That way, the "do not call list" rules do not apply, and a greedy agent can show up in six months to try to sell you one of their investments.

How is this decided and what makes the people who live in that small development of ticky tack tract homes so "special" that they can ruin everyone else's view? There's a major difference between life insurance and health insurance. Basically, dead is dead. There is no possibility of not paying the claim.
With health insurance, however, the CEO's who make the most money (in some cases, millions of dollars) are those who can find the most loopholes and can determine how to cheat or otherwise not compensate those faithful policyholders.
This includes not providing services to which these people are entitled. Shame.

Gabby, not surprisingly, voted for this monstrous bill which will result in higher taxes, the demise of private insurance companies, rationed health care and add to our sky-rocketing deficit.
Our only hope is that there will be enough folks in the senate who will vote against this debacle. Of course, if Reid decides to use the "nuclear option" we are screwed.

RESIGN SENATORS McCAIN AND KYL!!!!
So many things to comment about today that it is overwhelming. One vote in the Senate I cannot emotionally let go is the vote of our Arizona Senators supporting GANG RAPE, PROTECTION/COVER-UP FOR RAPISTS, FALSE IMPRISONMENT.
I have written before and a commenter stated there must be a reason. I have read the simple short Amendment to the Defense Appropriations 2010. The Amendment 2588 has no fine print, no catch clauses. It was proposed Oct. 1st giving 5 days for Senators to review and comment on. The actual vote on the Amendment was Oct. 6th. I believe there is no greater proof of the Republican agenda, to just say NO, delay everything to make Democrats or is it the Pres. Obama to seem like do-nothings. I have contacted our Senators offices many times to get a comment without a single answer. Please read the below information, check it out yourself.
Resign! Senators McCain and Kyl
For failure to represent Arizonians, failure to enforce the 7th Amendment of the Bill of Rights, support rapists and their cover-up, embarrassing Arizonians, no support of women issues.
October 6, 2009, the Senate was debating the Defense Appropriations 2010, bill H.R. 3326. Sen. Al Fraken of MN offered Amendment 2588 – Binding Arbitration, the government should not give defense contracts to companies if those companies prevent their employees who have been raped or discriminated against from suing in court. 30 male republican senators voted against the Amendment including McCain and Kyl.
The Amendment, vote number 308, emerged in large part of the horrific plight of Jamie Leigh Jones. Mrs. Jones was then a 19-year-old woman patriot employee of Kellogg, Brown and Root, KBR, sub-contractor to huge defense contractor Halliburton. Mrs. Jones was housed in the green zone of Iraq with some 400 male employees where she complained twice of sexual harassment with no action. One evening Mrs. Jones was approached by her fellow male workers who gave her a drink, after two sips she was unconscious, drugged. Upon waking, Mrs. Jones discovered one of her rapists who was glad to admit his misconduct. On a trip to the bathroom Mrs. Jones discovered her gang rape. She reported the rape, taken to a doctor confirming the gang-rape. The doctor medical documented proof has disappeared. KBR then locked Mrs. Jones in a storage locker under guard armed with machine guns with no food or water for 24 hours. The contract with KBR is binding arbitration, silence with the result of objection means termination of employment. To this day Mrs. Jones has been denied her day in court and no action against her rapists. THIS IS WHAT YOU SUPPORT WITH YOUR NO VOTE SENATORS JOHN McCAIN AND JON KYL. Arizonians want no part of what you supported!

Re: the Oct. 20 article "Rock's image likened to Holy Mother's."
I am amused and often bemused by the periodic "discovery" of religious images found in unusual places. The latest is a rock allegedly containing the likeness of the Holy Mother. These images often seem similar to paintings executed by famous artists and invariably excite the religiously inclined. But no one knows what these "sainted" figures really looked like. Most likely these talented artists painted their subjects as they wistfully hoped they had appeared — mystical and physically appealing.
For example, the Virgin Mary generally is depicted as ethereal-looking and downright beautiful. But hey, she really could have been truly ugly with buck teeth, crossed eyes and bad skin. Likewise, Jesus is generally represented as handsome with a beard and long hair. Hmm. Jesus could have been a true rebel with a crew cut and clean shaven.
So, please, a little common sense is demanded the next time a religious figure is seen in a bruised grapefruit or on a rusted refrigerator.
Nick Cariello
Retired journalist, Tucson
...............................
Personally, I find the discoveries of such images comforting. They are not the cause of my belief nor do they alter my faith, they simply seem to be a way for God to communicate that He is with us; be it through images of our Lord or His mother.
The images themselves need not have any historical
accuracy to aid the faithful or cause a non believer to believe.
The images of the Blessed Mother vary according to the part of the world various apparitions have taken place and that would appear to be so that natives of that land can better associate.
As an interested Catholic whose faith leads me to trust in the Goodness of God, I trust that these images are physical gifts from beyond time and space, where all the faithful exist in the full Presence of the God who created me.
Only physical death will allow us to enter into this new reality or not.

I am sorry to disagree with you #10 but Fox News states lies on their programs. I have a low opinion of Congress in general and the American Public to believe whatever they see/hear on TV as fact.
I also know there are not enough hours in the day for the average individual to check out the statements made by those on Fox News as credible. I'm different, have time on my hands as disability retired, hemiplegic with much trouble getting around even in my wheelchair, typing with one-hand, on 90mg. of morphine daily to help keep the daily pain tollerable. You really didn't need to hear that but I did get a degree from the Univ. of Phoenix that required many papers written and each I had to have three sources when I quote a fact, not newspapers or opinion articles but something credible like the Congressional Record that only states exactly what happened without opinion. I discovered Fox News is not credible so I decided not to watch that network. I disagree with the approach the White House is taking regarding Fox News. The White House should release substantiated facts to show Fox is lying to the public.
#10 I have an idea, an Amendment to the Constitution. Please think that if 1 million voting Americans were surveyed and asked a question about lies from politicians, I believe 100% would agree they hate and are tired of being lied to. I just received this proposed Amendment back from an attorney who changed it around. If the American people can ensure freedom of speech in the 1st Amendment then the American people can certainly restrict politicians in their freedom of speech. Please let me know what you think:
Proposed
Constitutional Amendment
Any national elected official be it President, Vice President, Senator, Representative, staff of these officials, appointed with or without Congressional approval by entities of the U.S. government shall not provide false information to the American citizenry either knowingly or should have known nor fail to provide requested information.
1) Any government entity shall not fail to provide information to a proper investigative body, with the exception identified in 1) A) of this Amendment.
A) The issue of failing to provide information shall be placed before the two individuals, Majority and Minority leaders, of the House of Representatives who must promptly both agree the information involves current national security issues that shall be the only reason to withhold the information. This procedure is mandatory prior to access to the court system disputing providing the requested information.
2) Guilty of a violation of this Constitution in a court of law, shall be removed from office and prevented from holding any elected or appointed national position in the future. The court shall strip the individual(s) of all campaign funding and have the authority to enforce incarceration and/or monetary penalties the court deems proper to bring the issue of equity of the American people identified as victimized due to the violation of this Constitution. Campaign funding shall not be utilized in defense of this Constitution.

Have you read: Defense Appropriations 2010, bill H.R. 3326. Sen. Al Fraken of MN offered Amendment 2588??????
If this went through it would include an anti-arbitration amendment and anti-lawsuit amendment. The Courts have all ready ruled it's unenforceable. If you sign a contract saying you will use arbitration first. You have to use that first. No matter what some Comic Comgress person puts up. As far a KBR/Halliburton they just got a new contract under this President.

I have read the Defense Appropriations 2010 bill and Amendment 2588. I hope everyone does. I also hope people read the 7th Amendment a guarantee to the courts to address civil issues. A confidentiality clause and finality in arbitration violates the 7th Amendment. The Supreme Court has ruled a person cannot sign away rights guaranteed under the Constitution. No employer should have a finality clause. The courts do no agree with the position an employer may insist on an employee waiving Constitutionally guaranteed rights.

RE: Here's to continued success of newspapers
The 'Red Star' just hastened it's demise by removing the TV Guide portion of the paper and substituting some weekly magazine that we will now have to subscribe to.
The traditional TV Guide is only $39 for 57 issues where the new 'Red Star' version is $72 for 52 issues($39 if you continue to support the Red Star with a subscription)?
We canceled all but Sunday service from this paper when they admitted their support for the impostor who was elected president. Now they are attempting to charge extra for the only part of the paper that was worth reading.

The Supreme Court ruled a contract is binding, and if the person agreed to arbitration first that is what they have to do. Sen. Al Fraken's Amendment sounds all nice, but is unenforceable under the law. So said the Courts even before it was voted on. Don't agree with it don't sign the contracts.

Bye Bye Red Star.

#13 I would think that a person with as much time on his hands as you have would find time to point out the dishonesty of other media besides Fox The impression I get from your so- called research is that you have an agenda just like everybody else You do not appear to me to be the ideal person to be lecturing anybody about honesty
