PHOENIX — The White House said Friday that more than 12,000 jobs were saved or created in Arizona because of President Obama's economic stimulus plan, and Gov. Jan Brewer said most were ones saved in education, despite the state's deep budget troubles.

Massive government spending programs only offer Americans false hope. Solely designed to treat the symptoms of our current economic problems, they do not effectively deal with the underlying causes of these problems. Any jobs created by these efforts will be temporary and will vanish once the money has been spent.
How does trillions of dollars of unsustainable government spending over an indefinite period of time solve our nation’s economic crisis? It only increases our national debt at a time, when it was our reliance on credit and debt that precipitated the problem in the first place. It’s like throwing gasoline on a fire in an effort to extinguish the flames. Does this really make any sense? The truth be told, current economic recovery efforts are just a continuation of an ongoing Ponzi scheme, which has been promoted by politicians of both political parties over the last several decades. They have told and continue to assure the citizens of this nation that we can have it all without regard to who is actually going pay for these excesses when the bills finally become due.
The real cause of America's economic crisis is our inability with live within our means. Real solutions to the current economic crisis will require substantial changes in how America conducts its business at home and abroad. If we were able to substantially reduce our nation’s huge trade deficit, it would result in the injection of hundreds of billions of dollars into the U.S. economy, which would otherwise be diverted overseas. One of the best economic stimulus projects, which our nation could employ to help resolve the severe economic crisis, would not cost the American tax payer a single dollar nor would it add a single dollar to our national debt. It would involve lifting self-imposed barriers placed on us at the behest of special interest groups, which have only increased America’s dependence on foreign imports and severely impeded our ability to be more self-sufficient. Only through the revival of the wealth producing sectors of our economy will the healthy, stable foundation of our economic system will be restored.

Considering the state of our nation’s economy, there are still some in our community including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Congressman Raul Grijalva, who have repeatedly stated that the good paying jobs, which would be offered by the Rosemont copper project as well as many additional jobs that would indirectly result from this activity, are neither needed nor wanted by our community. Instead of forcing our businesses to move their operations overseas, its time that our representatives in Washington support these efforts to put Arizonans back to work. It’s better than depending on meager handouts from the federal government, which only increase our national debt at the expense of future generations.
Large mining projects of this type are capable of pumping massive amounts of capital into the communities, where they operate. According to a recent independent study published by the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources and Arizona State University, the Rosemont project will result in an annual economic benefit to Pima and Santa Cruz counties of $745 million over the twenty year life of the mine and will also create of 2,000 new jobs for our community.
Now that is exactly the type of economic stimulus package that our community needs and when done in compliance with strict federal, state and local laws and regulations, it will not cost the American taxpayer a single dime.

The US Government's job in times of severe recession is to ensure that people in this country have jobs in order to pay bills in order to support the overall economy until the recovery becomes self sustaining. I agree that much of the stimulus spent so far is wasteful and we need REAL long term solutions to create jobs and reverse what is the biggest economic disaster this great country has seen in over 70 years. First, here are the facts and they are scary (halloween or not)... the real unemployment rate in this country is approaching 10% (arizona 9.3%) but a better measure of how bad things are, the U-6 measure of unemployment, which includes those marginally attached, and working for economic reasons is 17%. That means 1 in every 6 people in the US cannot find work or is underemployed (ie-would work more if they had the chance). Fact- as of Oct 3rd there are 10 million people receiving unemployment insurance or extended benefits due to government programs, which is unprecedented. What I am getting at is the gentleman with comments above (Chris) has a point. The Rosemont Mine will clearly create direct jobs to skilled workers producing real output for the Arizona economy, as well as indirect jobs to support the local economy (the restaurants, drug stores, etc to support the workers). Arizona's expected 2010 budget deficit is expected to be $1.5 billion. The benefits of this mine are expected to be $745 million annually for 20 years! The alternatives to close budget deficits are laying off more state workers, teachers, etc. I am all in favor of saving the environment, but I think we have to be realists here and understand the gravity of the current situation and start ensuring our elected officials support policies that make sense for the state- creating good paying jobs (instead of the all-enduring Washington policy of "kicking the can down the road" to avoid making hard decisions in order to continue to keep their offices). I support the Rosemont Mine as it is one project that can help our children enjoy a higher standard of living.

I don't profess to be an economist. In fact Economics was the only course that gave me a tough time in college. Having said that, it doesn't take an economist to see that if you are focusing on supposed "shovel ready" jobs, that you are only employing people for a finite amount of time. Once that project has been completed, the job goes away unless there is more money there for more projects.
This is what happens when you give $800 billion to power mad politicians only interested in maintaining a political majority.
We should have focused on long term job creation, and I am not talking about government jobs.

JT,
" Once that project has been completed, the job goes away unless there is more money there for more projects. "
Stimulus is not Permulus...infusion of money is not supposed to directly create permanent jobs, but instead to stimulate short-term demand, which hopefully will be enough to get us over the hump and lead to longer term demand which is the motor that drives our economy.
Our economy is Demand Driven. No demand, nothing is produced, served, and nobody is employed.
No job equals no demand. At least the stimulus is enough to keep some people paying their mortgage and buying groceries. If there is enough demand, the grocery store will hire a few more employees...let's hope so.

What is that?
Since all consumer products are now made in cheap labor markets -- Mexico, Philipinnes, China, Honduras, etc-- what hope is there?
Maybe our only hope is new smart energy technology. What's the only thing other countries can't produce cheaper than us?
A new energy grid....new solar energy parks...windmills...these are the only thing I can think of that can't be made somewhere else for cheaper right now.
What other possibility is there for creation of long term jobs? Besides health care for our aging population, and education for our kids?

The best part of this story is the fact that most of the jobs saved through the stimulus were teaching jobs. I guess everyone forgot about the great state debacle where they gave the schools 250k before receiving the stimulus and then were going to use that stimulus money elsewhere when they got it. However the stimulus money HAD to go to schools so they schools got 500k instead of the proposed 250k. I wonder if that had anything to do with the fact that 12000 jobs mainly education got saved.

What "earth" were you living on from 2001 to 2007?
As I seem to recall, it's been pointed out numerous times that we, as a nation and as individuals were doing pretty damned good until 2007 (once the democRATS had control of congress).
Did your job go in the toilet January 21, 2001?
Did your home go into foreclosure January 21, 2001?
Did your savings disappear January 21, 2001?
Did your retirement disappear January 21, 2001?
If you answered no to any or all of these (most likely the latter) then your claim: "the mess it took Dick-n-Dubya eight years to create."
Is about as credible as the "millions of jobs saved or created" by Oblah-blah-blah's so-called stimulus.

#35 No, I didn't think the newly elected president could "fix" the economy in nine months...but I did hope he'd do alot more than he has to help people keep or get jobs, and it only took Yobama three months to put the country farther into debt with his cocamamey "stimulus" packages. For other comments made: unemployment is the major reason the economy is so bad right now, not living beyond our means. That was one factor causing the downfall of our economy at first, but right now people are not living beyond their means, they are trying to survive. Without jobs people can't spend. So "saving" jobs, mostly in the education area helps those of us out work how?? We need to slow imports down and start industry in our OWN country to put people back to work. Get a broader range of people with degrees...that means going back to school or apprenticeships. Alternative energy and service related jobs would help the middle class which has been hit the hardest. This is the priority, not golf, garden parties, dog birthdays and growing veggies on the whitehouse lawn!!

I just read the article on Yobama's comments on the economy:
"It is easy to forget that it was only several months ago that the economy was shrinking rapidly and many economists feared another Great Depression."
Uh say what?? Just what constitutes a "depression" to those on capitol hill? He thinks we aren't in one?? Well, there's the problem!!!
"Economic growth is no substitute for job growth," Obama said. "And we will likely see further job losses in the coming days, a fact that is both troubling for our economy and heartbreaking for the men and women who suddenly find themselves out of work. But we will not create the jobs we need unless the economy is growing."
Wow...thank you for letting us know it's going to get even worse. Just how does he think this country will survive with even more folks out of work?? Where does he think the money will come from to buy and spend?? How can the "economy" grow if we're all out of work??? This man is nutz. He's either living in another dimension, growing something other than veggies in that whitehouse garden or just drinkin' way too much beer!!

At least the program being "Shovel ready" was one thing the Administration was truthful about.
They're certainly out there shoveling it.

The stiumulus is a joke. Why would anyone think short term jobs would last?
The Rosemont mine,by the way, would create few jobs, when considering the jobs that would be lost as a result of the mine. More importantly, very few want a huge open pit copper mine at this location in the Santa Ritas.
I, too, am looking forward to future elections.

JT,
" Once that project has been completed, the job goes away unless there is more money there for more projects.

You have the fellow pushing rosmont as good jobs, and everyone else complaining about the congress; that at least, did something, and is held back by all the no sayers. "just saying no" is not the answer here.

"We should have focused on long term job creation, and I am not talking about government jobs."

Economists will tell you that there is no metric for "jobs saved" in their discipline. There are only jobs. The only thing that counts is how many. And how many have been lost. That number now stands at 3.3 million. and counting.
anybody who buy into the Obama BS deserves what they get. Unfortunately, they are taking the rest of us on that same suicide ride.

At this point in our country---and based on the current Democrats and their policies----a vote for any Democrat is a vote toward destroying our economy, culture, states, and country!!!
Whether it be the Obamacare nightmare, Cap and Tax Energy Bill, the illegal invassion, the Copenhagen Treaty, etc.----any elected Democrat will just hasten the destruction of our country!!!

#35,
What "earth" were you living on from 2001 to 2007?

Too bad that too many of us uppity women are not only armed, but much better shots than men! Get rid of Obama, but keep your antiquated religious beliefs away from my and my doctor's ability to control my own health and well-being. Take back this country from the illegals infiltrating our government and its benefits. Institute a flat tax for everyone (Democratic Congressman and women included) with NO loopholes. Rescind the tax-exempt status of all religious institutions. Since they find it necessary to impose their superstitious beliefs into local, state, and federal laws and regulations, then they can chip in and cough up their fair share in the cost of running this country.
