Tucson Oddity: Structure was once TEP substation

Some buildings just seem to stand out. Especially those that long ago stopped being used.

Thanks, Arizona Plumbing Supply, for contributing to the overall ugliness of the city.

Yeah, as if Prince & Stone would be Tucson's garden spot if not for this thing.

I remember in the 70's when it also had the local air raid siren would sound the drill every weekend.

It was the first Saturday of each month in the late 60's and early to mid-70's that the air raid sirens would be tested.

Has it only been 15 years? I've been in town since '84 - could have sworn that that shell has been vacant for at least that long...

But I could be wrong...

I used to walk by this thing everyday on my way to Amphi Jr. High in the late 70's. It was never an actual building, just three walls. i always thought that the walls were to contain any accident/explosion from spreading to the nearby homes.

JD O,

It HAS been gutted and vacant since at least the summer of '86.

I was building some apartments just up the road on Stone and Pasttime, and every Friday after work we'd stop to get sodas and beer at a convenience store that used to be across the intersection.
We'd sit on the tailgate and talk about what a nice "squash" court that place would make.

Thanks to Arizona Plumbing for maintaining this property. If TEP still had ownership it would be full of weeds and broken bottles.
What are any of you doing to make this a more beautiful city?
One suggestion..the Greyhound Co. has a bus leaving every hour.

Ask yourselves why you think that you should have any say about whether it stays, goes, gets torn down, or re-modeled.
Someone owns it, and its not you. They paid for it, and can do, or not do, whatever they want. At least they used to be able to..in the USA. Now I am not so sure.
Get over yourself. Mind your own business. If you think its too ugly, look away.
How about this..I think your house is an ugly color. I think all houses should be white. Any house that is not white is an eyesore. Lets ban all housepaint that is not white. Besides, white reflects heat, so those of you with houses of other colors, are wasting energy. I think there should be a law that says your house must be white, or you will be taxed heavily. Or maybe, we'll just take your house, and give it to someone who will appreciate it more, and paint it white.
Sounds ridiculous huh?
Everything in the world does not have to please you to be allowed to exist.
Slippery slope you freaking ignorant sheep.

I rode past that 'building' the other day and was wondering what it was. I would go with a containment building in case a transformer blew (I've been the witness to the fatal aftermath of one blowing when it was being serviced.) Really would be nice for TEP to tell us what that building was really used for.

#26, it is common practice for government agencies and public service providers to build walls around equipment that would otherwise be considered eyesores by the public. Funny how an eyesore containment wall is now being called an eyesore itself.
