Report: Illegal immigrant minors mistreated by US

Federal authorities have compromised the rights and safety of some unaccompanied illegal immigrant children they have detained, and inadequate government guidelines are partly to blame, according to a Texas-based research group.

Much addo about nothing. The think tank needs to go out and see what these Border officer have to deal with on the line and put it on the line.
I'd like to see some of these PHDs running and tackling someone who is resisting and here illegally.

Illegal immigrants mistreated...why are we amazed about it? whats' new? EVERYONE MISTREATS everyone here in the US. A very, very close friend of mine, so close that I see him in the mirror every morning, worked for a local car dealership here in tucson, recently, and He was so mistreated, just like a slave, like a disposable human being, and my friend is not illegal...we mistreat everyone, even ourselves!
Why did you vote for Obama, you should have voted for me!!!
Mistreating people, getting deep in debt, and spending money (that we didn't have), like stupid, IS NOT THE AMERICAN DREAM...

FYI, every one - secretary Chertoff will be at the UA Law School (1201 E Speedway) on Friday at 10:20 am.

There will be the usual open borders protesters there (apparently none have jobs). Any one who can get there to represent the U.S. citizen point of view would be great.

That bit about the Mexican Consulate intervening and the kid was taken to a hospital-I assume that was an American hospital and I will place a bet that the child is being instructed on how to sue this country for millions. If Mexico was as concerned as they pretend, they would keep these kids at home.

I don't understand why a "child" is out in the desert ALONE and then when they get caught the "Parents" complain that they weren't treated right. Seems to me they weren't 'treated right' at home either or were they "SENT" across the border by these "Loving" parents so that they would get caught. You can do a lot with "American Lawsuit Money " !!

For those of you who actually believe the story printed, then you probably still believe in Santa Claus. On the other hand, if you have some semblance of intelligence, you will check out the website for Center for Public Policy Priorities and bone-up on the details of their organization. Make sure to read all the footnotes. I see a lot of bias in their organization and its affiliations.

Lastly, when you think of the word 'kids', one tends to think 'child'. Sad to say but there are many many hard-core gang members who are teens (13-19) and these 'kids' KILL.

What sane parent would put their child in harms way? ANSWER: A parent who does not cherish the value of a childs life. They will simply reproduce again, and again, and again, and again...

15. Comment by la s. (lashakiraguera) said "For #6 Why focus on cultures, regardless, children are children. Oh, maybe you were abused yourself and thinks that's natural. Another thing, their probably the same people that remodeled your trailer.

I agree that children are children, but doesn't culture involve children? Doesn't culture refer to everyone in it, and how everyone interacts within the group? For some people, we can experience a part of the overall culture by sponsoring a child from another nation in a 'Hands Across The Borders"-style student exchange program.

And by your comment, what does that say about us as a culture? Using ad hoc tactics doesn't prove or disprove your point but rather shows your lack of debate skills. Might as well Godwin the whole conversation and bring up the Nazis.

I may not agree with #6's comments about how the Mexican culture sucks, but a valid point was brought up about the parents letting their minor child into the desert alone with several strangers.

Ok, our law enforcement is supposed to transfer these children without handcuffs or shackles? HELLO, as we have seen in our OWN recent news that children as young as 8 are capable of killing and yet we're supposed to trust a 13yr old who isn't even a citizen? Doesn't make sense to me. And another thing, had that agent given that girl a tylenol or something to help with her pain I'm sure it would end in a trial saying the agent gave her a date rape drug or something. Yes, they should be handled with care...NOT STUPIDITY!

Arizona Daily Star,

Please send this report, with an urgent plea for immediate help for his people, to Carlos “Slim” Helu.

As one of the top ten richest men in the world, controlling perhaps 12% of the economy of Mexico, he should be able to singlehandedly bailout the economic situation in HIS country.

This situation involving children running from the poverty and drug traffic violence in Mexico is probably directly related to Slim’s hording of wealth to avoid heavy taxation. Or, is actually he financing the drug wars?

The solution is simple: Don't risk potential problems by disrespecting the sovereignty of our border to begin with. Maybe if the Mexican government would get their heads out of their collective orifices and care for their own people, this would all vanish.

I am certain that all of the "children" are telling the truth about what they went through. If anyone complains, they need to complain to the parents who brought the children through, they are the ones who should bear the brunt of the public's ire. If they had not brought them in illegally, they would have no problem. When are the bleeding hearts going to realize, these people do not care, all they want to do is get to this country by any means possible.

You guys who complain about the parents and Mexican culture and law violations and whatever are ENTIRELY MISSING THE POINT. Just because a kid's parents are irresponsible doesn't mean we should look the other way when that child is abused!!! Who cares if it's not widespread? The point is, it shouldn't be happening at all!! Particularly when there's something we can be doing--such as establishing inter-agency written guidelines--to prevent it!

You can't punish children for the choices their parents make. That kind of thinking does not belong in my America.

If illegal alien children are being abused or neglected, they should be protected. They should be protected from the parents that put them in a dangerous, possibly life-threatening position by allowing them to break into a foreign country, whether they are unaccompanied, accompanied by their parents, or sent with strangers. CPS should be called immediately to protect the minor children. They shouldn't have their parents called to be reunited. Their parents should be called so the parents can complete a CPS case plan, which includes the demand that the parents must take care of all legal matters (for example, become legal citizens) If the parents can't complete that little task, they should go somewhere, such as Mexico or Honduras, where they are legal. These parents are neglecting their children. They should be treated just like Americans are treated. Why return children to neglectful parents when those parents will just send them across the border again, then yell and scream when they become injured? They KNOW there is a very good chance of injury, rape, kidnapping, death, yet CPS is never called by authorities. WHY?

WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT?

When a parent, guardian or custodian inflicts or allows the infliction of physical, sexual or emotional abuse, neglect,
exploitation or abandonment.

Physical abuse includes non-accidental physical injuries such as bruises, broken bones, burns, cuts or other injuries.
Sexual abuse occurs when sex acts are performed with children. Using children in pornography, prostitution or other
types of sexual activity is also sexual abuse.
Neglect occurs when children are not given necessary care for illness or injury. Neglect also includes leaving young
children unsupervised or alone, locked in or out of the house, or without adequate clothing, food, or shelter. Allowing children to live in a very dirty house which could be a health hazard may also be considered neglect.
Emotional abuse of a child is evidenced by severe anxiety, depression, withdrawal or improper aggressive behavior as diagnosed by a medical doctor or psychologist, and caused by the acts or omissions of the parent or caretaker.
Exploitation means use of a child by a parent, guardian or custodian for material gain.
Abandonment means the failure of the parent to provide reasonable support and to maintain regular contact with the child, including providing normal supervision, when such failure is intentional and continues for an indefinite period

#38, #43, #44

Speaking for myself, I do not, and would never, advocate carte blanche mistreatment of children, regardless of nationality. The reality is that the potential for mishaps is there during appprehensions of those violating the law, knowingly or not.
Cuffs can sometimes be put on too tight. Falls and scrapes can happen while someone is resisting arrest. Yes, sometimes bad things can happen intentionally, which is not a laughing matter. But let's let courts of law hear the cases and weigh the facts. Was the 13 year old girl that was interviewed telling the truth? I do not know. Should the Border Patrol be excoriated for denying her over-the-counter medication, or were they acting in a prudent manner, fearing that the medication could cause any number of adverse reactions, creating the likelihood of anger and a lawsuit claiming negligence by Border
Patrol? Lastly, those who oppose illegal immigration as a point of law should not automatically be branded "racists". Believe it or not, there are many, including myself, who are not.

Why is it that this needs to be pointed out every time this topic is discussed, IT IS NOT RACISM TO HATE CRIMINALS. As it was pointed out before, there are 13 year old gang members that kill. The Border Patrol cant take the chance that some of these kids might not be gang members. Each Border Patrol agents first responsibility is to ensure there own safety, so yea, they are going to treat every person they apprehend as potentially violent.

As far as not giving over the counter medications to illegals being detained, that is completely void of details. The Border Patrol is not a health care providing group. It is ILLEGAL for them to dispense drugs, even if they are over the counter. I work for a local fire dept. as an EMT and I am not permitted to give out over the counter medications. I'm considered a medical professional, and I cant give out Motrin or Tylenol, why is the Border Patrol, a law enforcement organization, expected to do so? Its not being inhumane, its avoiding possible adverse reactions that could result in death. Border Patrol agents are trained in basic first aid, not how to preform a detailed physical assessment of a patient and know contraindications for medications and procedures.
