NFL star Randy Moss to NASCAR?

Sometimes I think professional athletes, actors, musicians, etc. have too much time and money on their hands.

Case in point, NFL star Randy Moss is starting a NASCAR team.

Yesterday, Moss announced the formation of Moss Motorsports, LLC. The team, he said, will most likely make its debut in the Craftsman Truck Series during the second half of this season.

Who will be the team’s driver? Who will be the team’s sponsor? What manufacturer will the team use? Eh, who knows?

“We don’t have all of the details in place just yet, but I am very excited about Moss Motorsports becoming a part of NASCAR,” Moss said. “I am by nature a very competitive person and this is an outlet for me to compete at another level.”

I think he might be in for a rude awakening. Starting a NASCAR team is challenging and expensive, and many who actually have a history in the sport have failed.

NASCAR is ruled by big-money teams these days and the little guy often gets pushed out…or at least to the back of the pack.

So does someone with no racing experience actually have a shot? Can Moss Motorsports put together a competitive team when it moves to a full-time schedule in 2009?

I have a little advice for Moss if he wants to be successful in the Truck series.

One word – Toyota.

I have to share this little story of how Randy Moss almost ran over me on a bicycle one time.

So it was the summer of 2002 and I was interning at the Web site of the Minneapolis Star Tribune in Minnesota. Randy Moss was with the Vikings at the time.

I went to Vikings training camp in Mankato, Minn. I am walking along, minding my own business when a man comes zooming by on a bicycle and nearly clips me.

No one told me you’re not supposed to walk on the sidewalks because the players ride bikes to and from the dorms.

The man on the bike was Randy Moss. So, yep, I was almost run over by Randy Moss.

The end.
