It seems that everyone is offended that NBC targeted NASCAR fans in its attempt to show Americans being discriminating xenophobes toward Muslims.
My initial reaction at reading the story was, “Eh.”
What’s new, right?
NASCAR fans are obviously only redneck, uneducated racist Republicans with no social skills and no sense of decency who don’t respect anyone who’s not white, doesn’t go to church every Sunday morning before the race starts, and maybe Wednesday night too, and isn’t from somewhere where they talk real slow and don’t pronounce the Gs on the end of words. Oh, and they have to own guns…lots of guns.
Doesn’t everyone know that?
Maybe I’ve heard it all too often. Perhaps I have become desensitized to it because I hear it from someone, oh, I’m going to say at least once a week.
It is kind of strange to think that a person can be stereotyped so dramatically just for liking a particular sport.
Is my initial reaction when learning someone likes soccer to say, “Oh, so you must like getting drunk and picking fights and starting riots, and perhaps lighting things on fire, like cars.”?
Of course not.
So what do you think of football fans, Jaynelle?
“Aren’t they a bunch of drunk white dudes with their faces painted and letters spelling ‘Jets’ written across their enormous hairy beer bellies?”
“You like hockey? What are you—Canadian?”
Ooh, I might have taken it too far with that one.
You don’t really hear these things about fans of other sports but for some reason we open ourselves up for ridicule and awful speculation about our level of tolerance just because we like to watch guys drive stock cars around a racetrack.
I doubt this will change any time soon and I don’t really care anymore. If people want to look down at me and my “NASCAR peeps” I say let ‘em.
I’m not going to get all worked up about it. I’m not going to waste my breath trying to explain how much the sport has changed. How it’s not just a Southern thing anymore. How its fans aren’t all descendants of the Confederacy.
Maybe that’s the wrong attitude to take. Maybe I should want to educate people about how diverse NASCAR fans are.
Why bother?
People are still going to think what they want. Even the company who broadcasts half the season seems to think negatively of the people they want to attract to their network every Sunday afternoon.
I’ve taken the time to provide statistical proof to people in regards to NASCAR demographics and it does nothing to change their minds.
They just can’t get the Stars and Bars out of their eyes.
If NASCAR is so outraged that NBC was targeting their events then maybe they should do something about people flying that damn flag at tracks. Maybe they should do even more than they already are to get someone with a little darker skin tone in a full-time ride.
Until then, forgive me if I’m not sympathetic to poor, defenseless NASCAR and their “Why are you picking on little ol’ us?” attitude.
I’ve only been to races here in Arizona. I’m not sure what they are like in North Carolina or Alabama. Is it wrong of me to think the crowds might be just a bit different there than they are here? Is it wrong to think they might not be as open to those who are “different” there?
Sure. But I still can’t help but think that way sometimes. I know it’s all based on stereotypes and that’s wrong. I’ve only personally felt like I was discriminated against once in my life. I was actually quite north of the Mason-Dixon Line when it happened.
I don’t even really know what I’m trying to say with all this.
Do I think it was stupid and a little too easy for NBC to target NASCAR for its “Let’s find us some racists” segment? You bet. Do I think NASCAR is in the position to get all self-righteous? Not even close.
All I can say is, while I am from Texas, I am in fact not a redneck. I’m a city girl all the way. I have a college degree. I don’t ever speak in double, or triple, negatives. I don’t live in a trailer. I don’t even know anyone who has ever lived in a trailer. I’m not white. My family is probably best described as upper middle class. I have all my teeth. I don’t like beer. I’ve even been called snotty and pretentious because I will only drink Malibu rum or vanilla vodka. I went to a high school and college that resemble the United Nations. I appreciate diversity. I was member of the Asian Student Association, Indian Cultural Club and the Muslim Student Association in high school – I’m none of those. I say “y’all” a bit too much but most of the time I’m Southern accent free. I’m also one of those damn tree-hugging vegetarians. I even used to be a vegan. I have shot a gun—my dad is Texan through and through—but I don’t like them. Since my great escape from Catholic school at the age of 11, I have only been to church if someone died or got married. Oh, and—gasp—I have never voted for a Republican. And guess what? I’m a NASCAR fan.
I like beer, guns, and Nascar, but I can promise you this I am no redneck. I believe that part of the stereotype is true. If you don’t believe me play a little game with me next time you watch a Nascar race on TV and they show the crowd I want you to spot the minority. Also you can say all you want about the confederate flag but when you chose to display that flag you are displaying your racist nature for all to see so don’t be upset when someone calls you out on it.

It all comes down to assumptions.
As a fan of San Francisco and its baseball and football teams, I have to endure the inevitable comments about gay fans drinking wine and eating cheese at the tailgate parties. It’s a common assumption to make, and I believe there might actually be a party or two that fits that description. But I’ve never witnessed one. Neither has my wife. Oh wait, she and her best friend did drink a bottle of wine on the train to a Giants game once. I think I need to have a talk with her…
My mom and her family are Texans who cheer for the Cowboys. My dad’s side? San Franciscans. It’s a wonder I’m not living a Brokeback experience.
I spent the good part of my childhood growing up in Hawaii. Guess what – I don’t surf.
People make assumptions based on ignorance every day. Even those in charge of powerful “news magazine” television shows.
The problems arise when decisions are made based on those assumptions without bothering to learn the truth. NBC assumed NASCAR fans would react to the sight of Muslims in their midst and decided to bait those fans in hopes the reaction would make for some good video. This illustrates that racial profiling isn’t used solely against minorities.
As for the Confederate flag, this is how it affects me when I see it: It makes me angry. It represents a faction of people who no longer wanted to be a part of the United States. No one can argue with that fact. The ironic thing is, people who fly it today claim to be intensly patriotic who love their country.
The flag also represents a culture of intolerance. That point will be debated, but that’s how I see it.
I get the whole Southern pride thing. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of your roots. But, if you are a Southerner who is tired of being pegged as a redneck with racist tendencies, then I advise you to do a very simple thing: Be clever enough to find a better symbol of your pride. Fly the American flag. Fly your state flag (unless you’re from Mississippi). Fly a flag emblazoned with the number of your favorite NASCAR driver. Get creative.
Sorry this is so long…

Dear Ms Ramon,
The ‘Stars & Bars’? You mean Georgia’s current State Flag? You know, the one that has 13 stars in the blue box with alternating red/white/red bars. That Stars and Bars flag? The flag Georgia’s is based on is the ‘Stars & Bars’ – AKA 1st National Flag of the Confederate States of America – Is that the one that is in NAStyCARs’ oops, I mean CA$HCARs eyes?
Well you know that it couldn’t be in their eyes because the head CA$HCAR guy said that the redneck race fan is dead and gone forever from the $port.
NAStyCAR has gone from family fun and supporter of it’s fan base to corporate greedy monster chasing political correctness and dousing the loyal 3rd and 4th generation fans with warm yellow rain and telling us to float away, that illegals, blacks and gays will now be the new CA$HCAR fan clan.
Well, as facts have already shown – the southern market which they so loathe is slipping away faster than 3rd gear in a beat up transmission. Is there enough gay black men driving Toyotas from Mexico to keep the PeeCee $$$ flowing into France’s pocketbook?
Have fun without us, and enjoy y’all’s raceday with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton!

See the story recently about some Gentlemen in Florida submitting a proposal for a new vanity plate celebrating Confederate Heritage? The plate is to feature 3 Confederate Flags. Y’all know who the 2 men were? Care to find out?
One man’s name is HK Edgarton, former President of the Ashville NC NAACP. The other man’s name is Nelson Winbush. Both Gentlemen are BLACK.
Perhaps y’all’s bigotted views of Confederate Flag wavers need to be reexamined.
The last major Confederate Army to surrender was? Think it was a white guy? Nope – it was Brigadier General Stand Watie, Native American, and his Cherokee Braves Confederate Indian troopers actually only signed a cease fire, so technically, 1 shot from the US Army against any decendants of the Braves could result in renewed Civil War hostilities.
Speaking of waving state flags (except Mississippi as per the smaller minded) How about the Oklahoma State Flag? It contains the symbol of the Osage Indian Tribe – who were Confederate Soldiers and owned slaves! How about the State Flags of South Carolina and Virginia – both were created in 1861 after they left the Union! How about the Missouri State Flag which includes the coat of arms of the Confederate Forces of Missouri!
Oh OK, How about enlightened Yankee State Flags like New York, which depicts a masted ship that represents commerce? The seal was created in the late 1700’s and at that time the major commerce of New York was Human Chattel (slaves)! Or how about the Pennsylvania State Flag? That flag bears the coat of arms of the Penn Family – dealers in slave ownership, slave trading, and slave labor! The Minnesota State Flag? For 123 years, it showed an Indian Brave running away from a white settler who took his land. It was only recently changed to show the Indian riding TOWARD the white man for political correct reasons.
People waving the Flag of New Hampshire have no pride in themselves or country – cause their flag shows the Frigate Raleigh, a ship built by Americans, but the 1st Captain was a COWARD, the 2nd Captain was INEPT, allowing the Raleigh to fall into British hands and was used against Colonial Forces for the duration of the Revolutionary War – helping the Redcoats win Charleston Harbor!
The State Flag of West Virginia – Admitted into the Union by Lincoln in 1863 AS A SLAVE STATE!
No, the Confederates (see AMERICAN SOUTHERNERS) only wanted a Constitutional Republic as guarenteed by the Founding Fathers. They weren’t getting it then, and we AIN’T GETTING IT NOW (see BUSH, MODERN POLITICAL PARTIES, REPOOBS AND DEMONCRAPS)
— William Ernest 04/07/2006 06:10 AM #
Dear William
Let us not forget the Black Confederate Soldiers – did you know the very 1st memorial to Black soldiers was made in 1900 on the Confederate Memorial Statue in Arlington National Cemetary?
That statue was sculpted by a Jewish Confederate Veteran – Ezekial Moses. Heck, there were about 5,000 Jewish Confederate Troops, and the Confederate Secretery of State was a Jew – Judah P. Benjamin.
The Irish were also a huge part of the Confederacy, giving troops like the 24th Ga & Sons of Erin, as well as leaders like General T.R.R, Cobb, Hugh Howell Cobb, and General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne.
It is funny listening to these silly left coast libbies spout hate and narrow vision over a symbol of honor and bravery wielded by a rainbow of races (Blacks, Whites, Mexicans, Hispanics, Irish, Women, Men, Boys, Jews, Prussian, Scandanavian, Canadian) and beliefs (Jews, Catholics, Christians, Native Americans, Methodists, Protestants) while cring about diversity and one world order.
They salute the Union Army that placed all non-white troops into segregated United States Colored Troops units, Slaughtered Indians, enslaved Irish & Chinese after Black slavery was outlawed, and established child slavery in sweat shops.
Gotta love them hypocritters, those wild and crazy left coast libbies. It is so easy for them to bash and hate, because they fail to understand and refuse to learn!
They will enjoy funding Jackson’s rainblow putsch shakedown org and brian frances’ diversity dream machine while NAStyCAR wastes away to nothing. Jackson is all smiles cause he has their money to support his bastard child and mistress.

Apologist? What is pointing out that 2 prominent black men proposing a 3 flag Confederate Heritage Fla vanity plate apologizing for?
What is pointing out that the Penns state flag bears the coat of arms of a slave dealer apologizing for?
What is pointing out that numerous races and religions fought for the south apologizing for?
OK If it is what makes your dinghy float better in the toilet, then yes, I apologize for providing truth. Glad to see it hurts :-)

You can spew all the retoric about the confederate flag you want to, but we all know that the people who so proudly wave the flag are doing it for the wrong reasons.
— Robert 04/08/2006 05:59 PM #
Mr Robert Ramon
If you will read the above entries, you will find that the ONLY Confederate Flag ‘RETORIC’ is spewed by Janelle, John, John Newsom, and YOURSELF :-)
The postings about northern state flags and historical facts are from myself and William :-)
Seems we all know that TRUTH gets called RETORIC and being APOLOGETIC – gotta love those poor left coast libbies!
OK You want Confederate Flag talk,
let us cover that topic for the first time then – shall we…
Y’all have no dogs in the Flag fight. None of y’all’s ancestors were Confederate Soldiers. Nor did any of y’all run shine in the hills of Georgia or run bootleg whiskey from the revenuers – which was the early founding days of NAStyCAR.
Y’all fail to even TRY to grasp the TRUTHS spelled out for y’all here in the above posts, and choose to remain ignorant so as to continue to spit hate and venom (Hmmm, lemme see… should I wave the red white and blue flag of brave and honorable American Veterans, or the yellow flag bearing the coat of arms of a slave dealing family? Duh, I love those pennsylvanians of course you southern redneck hick!)
Y’all stereotype and profile the 100% of the CS Flag waving population into y’all’s fantasy that we support slavery (like those currently in AFRICA do) and hate all non-whites. AGAIN y’all refuse to consider the aforementioned Indians and Blacks among others who wave the flag – WHY?
The King of NAStyCAR Richard Petty won numerous races and placed a Confederate Battleflag on his hood in victory lane.
Dale Ernhardt was unashamed his famous #3 was centered on a hot selling Confederate Battleflag.
Sterling Marlin has said he would gladly be a gray clad soldier and has conducted tours at the Museum of the Confederacy.
Y’all can not provide 1 lick of evidence linking the popular Confederate Battle Flag to slavery, however the proof is overwhelming that the US Flag is the slavery flag (Flew over slave ships, flew over slave auctions, flew over a slave nation for 90 years – heck it even flew over the genocide of Indians) so continuing to preach that lie shows y’all’s own ignorance :-)
The popular Southern Cross of the American South was born of Southerners, and will always be an icon of the South and Southern Traditions – and regardless of what Jackson Sharpton and France say, CA$HCAR is decended from Southern Stock and it shall be waved at races by Southern Fans – if only to spite y’all PeeCee bleedin left coast libbies!

Dear Billy,
Why bother and waste your ‘internet ink’ on these silly folks? No amount of facts, of truth, of logic, or pleas of understanding will ever reach them.
You have provided numerous items here for their betterment, but they blow it and us off. Racism (?) as they claim will not go away until ‘THOSE PEOPLE’ begin to take these truths and make it a part of their ‘left coast libbie’ lifestyle.
God loves us all, and He tells us – especially those same sexers out west to stop bumping butts and playing kissy face with each other, and get on their knees for the RIGHT reasons, and stop the hate like displayed here and acept his Son as their Lord and Savior

Man, I don’t look at my blog while I’m away from work for the weekend and I come back to all this.
I’m not going to get into an argument about history.
This isn’t about being politically correct. It’s about understanding that a large group of people don’t see “Southern pride” when they see the Confederate flag flying.
Texas provided troops to the Confederate Army. I challenge anyone to find a more proud Texan than me. You know how I show it? I put Texas flag everywhere I can – all over my house, my car, my desk at work. I certainly don’t fly the Confederate flag because I care that it is offensive to so many of my fellow Americans.
Is calling me a liberal supposed to be an insult? I find it to be the greatest compliment you could give me so thanks!
And don’t bring your homophobia into my blog. That has no place here and I won’t allow it.
My friend Sara has a fish named Jesus. We like to call him "My lord and savior" for short.
Oh, and don’t call me “left coast.” Am I a coastal elitist? Probably. But I’m straight up representing that G.C., baby—Gulf Coast!
— Jaynelle 04/09/2006 04:19 PM #
Tell ‘em, Jaynelle. Hey rednecks, I think “Blue Collar Comedy Hour” is on.
Oh, and since you hicks love to quote Jesus so much, just remember the guy was probably the most “liberal” person to ever walk the Earth. Read the freaking Bible again, everything that guy ever did could be considered “left coast” by your standards.
So while you throw the term “lib” as some sort of derogatory remark, I’ll wear that shit on my sleeve proudly, you racist, homophobic, xenophobic, civil war-losing punks.
— Mike D 04/09/2006 07:19 PM #
Dear Jaynelle,
Texas kicks a$$. Glad to see you paint your space with the Lone Star Flag!
Symbols are only what we attach to them – and while the Confederate Battle Flag means pride for southerners to most, the US Old Glory Flag also means genocide and terrorism to most Native Americans.
The Lone Star, made famous on the Goliad “Come and Take it” flag and the ‘Bonnie Blue’ flag – as well as the Dallas Cowboys (My favorite team since 1975!) also saw glory over Confederate General John Bell Hood’s troops. One of the Texas Flags most famous paintings is of the Texas Brigade’s fight in the cornfield at Antietam.
I salute you, Ma’am. I salute the greatness of Texas and Texans of all walks.
Glad to see DEJr didn’t win today!
God Bless y’all

The Lone Star, made famous on the Goliad “Come and Take it” flag and the ‘Bonnie Blue’ flag – as well as the Dallas Cowboys (My favorite team since 1975!) also saw glory over Confederate General John Bell Hood’s troops. One of the Texas Flags most famous paintings is of the Texas Brigade’s fight in the cornfield at Antietam.
I salute you, Ma’am. I salute the greatness of Texas and Texans of all walks.
Glad to see DEJr didn’t win today!
God Bless y’all
