Have no fear NASCAR Nation, Gordon and Junior will battle for title in '06

I have always said that Drive for Five in ‘06 sounds better than Drive for Five in ‘05.

OK, I just made that up right now but I really don’t care about catchy slogans. I just want my favorite driver back fighting for his fifth championship.

In a strange way I want Dale Earnhardt Jr. back too.

If Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. not making the Chase this year was supposed to be so bad for NASCAR just imagine how good for NASCAR it would be if they were 1-2 in the points all the way until Homestead.

Gordon vs. Earnhardt – Version 2.

The son taking on his late father’s young rival. It really is the stuff of Hollywood.

I can almost hear Bill Webber ridiculously overdramatizing it on the 5-hour pre-race show.

Of course if Gordon lost the title to Junior in the final race by 2 points I don’t think I’d ever recover but it’d make great headlines.

It seems all NASCAR news I have seen over the past couple of days is about Gordon’s big comeback.

He’s finished first and second in the last two races so I guess the talk is warranted.

I was quite skeptical when Steve Letarte took over for Robbie Loomis.

I was glad to see Loomis go because I was a big fan of blaming everything on him. Not really fair but I still enjoyed doing it.

There was just something about having a crew chief who was barely a teenager when Jeff started his career in the Cup series that made me a little nervous.

So far the kid’s getting the job done.

Junior also looked strong at Atlanta and now we head to Texas where he always seems to run well.

Maybe things are turning around for him, too.

Ah, I can’t wait for next year when NASCAR once again has a legitimate excuse to plaster Junior – and to a lesser extent, Gordon – on anything and everything.

The season will be over in three weeks and then everyone starts over with a clean slate.

Can you smell the Junior hype in the air yet?

  2. Come on… NASCAR can publicize and dramatize Gordon vs. Earnhardt till 2100, but the last time I checked last time both were in the Chase neither won it. There are too many guys that run too well for those two to ever have a heads up battle. Those pesky guys like Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch and Greg Biffle and Ryan Newman always seem to come in and break up the party.
