UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Photographer Julie Ramsey ventures deep into the Tucson music scene armed only with her trusty camera.

Scottsdale club Axis-Radius shows some class

This past Wednesday, I trekked up to our capital and had the time of my life at a beautiful nightclub in the heart of the nightlife scene in Scottsdale.

Axis-Radius is a classy, spacious club sporting both hip-hop and electronic music – good for people with a need for varied sounds. You can switch over if you feel bi-polar when you attend.

This week was a special treat as the bad boys of electronic music hit Axis on their One plus One tour. In my opinion, any Arizona club featuring these acts is beyond stellar. I would never have expected to see James Zabiela and Nic Fanciulli in the desert. I did see Zabiela in New York City, but Arizona? Wow, way to go, Axis. You will be finding me up there on nights when I am in Phoenix.

So Tucson, if you are ever in need of escaping our quaint, beautiful life here in the Old Pueblo, take the short drive to Phoenix and see their nightlife. It is a bit more exotic than you may think.

There is a dress code at Axis, so come prepared, wear your best dress and come ready to shake it!
