UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Peaches was right: she played the Rialto, minds were blown

Because these days her live act features multiple functional costume changes (leotards galore!), light-up everything, a gorgeously sexy live band, custom made instruments, gracefully balancing herself on top of a screaming crowd and much, much more. Minds are getting blown so hard they end up splattered down the block.

Carry on, Tucson's wayward son Mark Matos returns

Cheery organ, pedal steel, handclaps, lazy sunny melodies and gentle vocals greet the listeners of Words of the Knife and gently lull into comfortable (there’s that word again) pleasure. Fans of Sparklehorse who long for the magic pop touch that isn’t devoid of that pleasant, rambling ’70s psychedelia influence will be more than pleased.

Tucson gets a taste of dance raunch queen Peaches - the Subbacultcha interview

I can perform alone with basically just my underwear on and you will have a very entertaining time, you know? And that’s what’s weird about what I think I can offer to a live performance. Because I can rock the sh*t out of it with basically nothing. So there’s a lot going on and my band is eye candy and they’re also amazingly talented. We’ve been doing this show for five months now and we love it. It’s fantastic- everyone who sees it, it blows their minds.

Kiss me, I'm Bono! U2 brings the mother ship to University of Phoenix Stadium

10/23/2009 11:20 AM

These days U2 is designed for stadiums in the way a Formula One racecar is designed for the track. Bono still waves a flag and preaches from the rock and roll pulpit, but these days the flag is a custom made, illuminated million dollar item and the pulpit is a gargantuan stage set-up complete with moving bridges, a runway that must have been at least ÂĽ mile in circumference and countless other custom-made light up props. Oh and by the way, it looked like a cross between a Dr. Suess-like giant green squid attack and the descent of the mother ship
