Despite the microscopic-sized set, the concert wasn’t a total loss. Hearing 2 Live Crew’s new material being “performed live” was intriguing. And if you were expecting Just Wanna Be Heard to be a regurgitation of the late ’80s Miami bass-infused party jams they became known for, think again. It’s clear that Fresh Kid Ice and Brother Marquis have been listening to a whole lot of today’s hip-hop radio and have been taking notes.

Within Jackson’s bruised and lonely soul there lived a performing genius. Sadly, that genius had been slowly been buried beneath a slow avalanche of ancient wounds left untreated that were allowed to fester throughout the years instead of healing. It was buried under piles of monetary decadence and a sheltered life lived without any sense of precious normalcy.

Attendees are encouraged to glam it up in their bawdiest and best. That means anything goes, as long as it’s over the top and fetchingly flashy. A velvet rope, paparazzi and classic cars will take you back to the era of one-use flashbulbs, cats-eye glasses and old-school Vegas style while you enjoy a cabaret stage, DJs, roaming performance artists, music, dancing and delightfully gaudy art. Of course, if all that isn’t your cup of tea, you could just lounge fabulously by the Flamingo’s sparkling pool.

Peter Murphy maintained a down-to-earth, yet elegant presence throughout the evening, even when two overzealous groupies grabbed his legs, a la Elvis-mania, while he stood at the edge of the stage. He didn’t flinch. In fact, he spent a surprising amount of time shaking eager, extended hands and making good-natured comments (“Hello darling, how are you?”) towards the giddy devotees huddled towards the front of the stage.

It is oft mentioned that Benjamin Weikel has lent his percussion skills to Modest Mouse and when at a Helio Sequence show, one can see why the reigning kings of now-radio-friendlyish-indie-rock took notice. He is a willowy, mild-mannered, affable fellow who when put behind a drum kit becomes Animal of “The Muppets” fame. Arms flail, skins are bashed and fantastic drummer-faces are made.
