UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Star reporter Coley Ward covers nightlife. He's on a quest to know the first name of every bartender in town. When he's not working and out on the town he orders a whiskey ginger. When he's at home he drinks home brew. His favorite dance song is Tower of Power's "Down to the Nightclub."

Here’s an email I got from the Ladies who run Girls Bikeout:

Dear Ladies,

We know you’ve got new scarves, hats, gloves, and blinky lights to show off. If you haven’t joined Girls Bike Out on the road, we think you should! This Saturday, January 3rd, meet at Time Market, 444 E University Blvd, 6pm for our First Ride of 2009!

Girls Bike Out is a ladies bicycle ride aimed to promote femme bonding, fashion, and bicycle riding! The idea is to Dress in Style, and then hop on your bicycle for a leisurely ride around town. We never wear you out and we always have a good time.

We like to ride in dresses, heels, and lipstick, but remember, how you “Style” is up to you!

Come join us, 6:00pm, at Time Market, the 1st, and 3rd Saturdays of every month.

If you’d like to lead the group on your own route, feel free to send us your ideas!

  • GBO ends each ride with a fun social gathering. If you’d like to end the ride at a fashionable Tucson location, feel free to send us your ideas! Business Owners, if you would like to host a GBO ride, please contact us ***

Not in Tucson? Make Girls Bike Out global- Invite your girlfriends and start your own rides! Let us know how it goes!!

xoxo GBO
