Caliente Contest
This week's Spotlight focuses on the Austin, Texas-based rock band White Denim, which is scheduled to play Club Congress Saturday.

White Denim's lead singer is James Petralli, whose father is former major league catcher Geno Petralli.

Geno Petralli played 12 seasons for the Rangers and Blue Jays.

Petralli led all of baseball in passed balls with 35 in 1987, 20 in 1988, and 20 in 1990. His 35 passed balls established a Major League single-season record.

Most of Petralli's past balls occurred when he was catching a famous knuckleball pitcher.

For a chance to win an audio book tell us the name of that knuckleballer, who pitched until he was 46 years old.

Controversy at the margarita competition!

Last night’s World Margarita Championships winner was Jax Kitchen, a newcomer to the Tucson restaurant scene.

But owner Brian Metzger’s celebration was short-lived.

After the judges learned Metzger had used a basil and mint-infused agave nectar in his drink (a violation of contest rules), they stripped him of his title and awarded it to runner up El Charro — though they allowed Metzger to keep the “People’s Choice” award that he won.

Metzger says the whole thing was just a misunderstanding.

“The rules said I couldn’t infuse simple syrup,” he says. “But I didn’t. I infused agave nectar. It doesn’t really matter to me. I was happy people loved it. To me there’s so much positive that came out of it that I’ll concede the judges’ award. There will be no lawsuit pending.”

Phew.

Now that we’ve put that controversy to bed, we can return our attention to more pressing matters — like figuring out Metzger’s award-winning recipe!

Fortunately, he’s going to make it easy for us. Here it is:

2 oz. of silver tequila
1/2 oz Cointreau
2 oz. infused agave nectar
1/2 oz Meyer lemon juice
1/2 oz lime juice

“We dilute the agave nectar with a little water and heat it on a stove top,” Metzger says. “When it’s warm we transfer it to a second container. We make a big tea bag using a coffee filter and fill it with basil and mint and let that sit in the agave nectar for about 18 hours.

“We chose Partida Tequila. It’s the one we have in the restaurant. We feel it has the best flavor profile. Meyer lemons just came in season two-and-a-half weeks ago. We used that and lime juice that was squeezed a la minute.

“When you are ready to make the margaritas you shake the mixture really hard and our garnish for the evening was a blackberry skewered with a mint sprig.

Bottoms up, Tucson!

  1. Thanks for seeing my side!! I hope you all like the margarita. We have it at the restaurant for the next few days – just ask for the “peoples’ margarita” when you come in!!! :)
