Caliente Contest
This week's Spotlight focuses on the Austin, Texas-based rock band White Denim, which is scheduled to play Club Congress Saturday.

White Denim's lead singer is James Petralli, whose father is former major league catcher Geno Petralli.

Geno Petralli played 12 seasons for the Rangers and Blue Jays.

Petralli led all of baseball in passed balls with 35 in 1987, 20 in 1988, and 20 in 1990. His 35 passed balls established a Major League single-season record.

Most of Petralli's past balls occurred when he was catching a famous knuckleball pitcher.

For a chance to win an audio book tell us the name of that knuckleballer, who pitched until he was 46 years old.

Two regionals over - Six teams in - 30 bouts to go (WFTDA Regionals)

09/23/2009 10:24 AM
Don Bombshelter

Before the regionals summary and predictions for the South Central Region, I just gotta say CONGRATS again to TRD Iron Curtain with yet another road win. These gals, with a bit of help from some the other teams, went out to Santa Cruz and won it in the last jam, 94-90. The Iron Curtain has had an impressive road schedule including a trip to the Great White North to be (I’m pretty sure) the first out of state team to play in Alaska.

OK. The WFTDA Regionals continued with the North Central Region last weekend. The live feed was provided by a different team and so it was not integrated into the DNN Live. But you could get the textcast and live video feed with some finanglin’. But I was only able to watch a few bouts including parts of the NC Championship.

This regional featured some strong showings by a number of the lower seeded teams, including an intra-city win by North Star defeated over Minnesota (both based in Minneapolis-St. Paul). The Mad Rollin’ Dolls (3) upset the Detroit Derby Dames for a trip to Nationals and a shot at the Windy City for the North Central Championship. Detroit then defeated Cincinnati for the final NC Nationals spot. In the NC Championship, Windy City controlled the bout throughout for a strong win against the Mad Rollin’ Dolls, 150-50.

Final standings from the North Central are (*My Prediction):

  1. Windy City Rollers (1 seed)*
  2. Mad Rollin’ Dolls (3 seed)*
  3. Detroit Derby Girls (2 seed)*
  4. Cincinnati ( 4 seed)
  5. North Star Roller Girls (8 seed)
  6. Arch Rival Rollergirls (5 seed)
  7. Brewcity Bruisers (9 seed)
  8. Burning River Roller Girls (10 seed)
  9. Minnesota Roller Girls (6 seed)
  10. Grand Raggidy (7 seed)

So that means that it’s Windy City, MRD, and Detroit representing the North Central at nationals.

Prediction Results for North Central.
Team Finish Order – 3 of 10 (7 of 20 to date)
Bout Winners – 7 of 15 (17 of 30 to date)

So I got the top three correct, but that was it.

Next up is the South Central next week (Sept. 25-27).

I’ll list by seed and then state my predicted order of finish and comments scattered throughout.

South Central Region

10. Memphis Roller Derby. Finish #9
9. No Coast Derby Girls. Finish #10
8. West Texas Roller Dollz. Finish #8
7. Tampa Bay Derby Darlins. Finish #7
6. Nashville Rollergirls. Finish #5
5. Atlanta Rollergirls. Finish #6
4. Dallas Derby Devils. Finish #4
3. Houston Roller Derby. Finish #3.

I’m hoping there’s some surprises out of the lower seeds, but don’t see any breaking into the top two. Maybe Houston could be upset, but I just don’t think so.
2. Kansas City Roller Warriors. Finish #2

The 2007 WFTDA champs got knocked out last year by the with an upset win by Duke City. Not gonna happen this year. Only Texas will defeat KCRW.

1. Texas Rollergirls. Finish #1.

The Muthas of Derby. They came so close to winning against Gotham, and have handled all other teams to date. They are going to nationals.

This sends Texas, Kansas City and Houston to the Regionals.

Again, check out the action at DNN Live

Next time will be the South Central results, and the West predictions.
