UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

“The Real Housewives of Pima County”?

Love ‘em or hate ‘em — the Orange County housewives are back for a third season. With the writer’s strike, perhaps a local spin-off is in order — “The Real Housewives of Pima County”?

Um, maybe not.

The Tucson show wouldn’t exactly live up to the standards set in the highly ridiculous but intriguing Bravo series which premieres “The Real Housewives of Orange County 3” at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Besides trips to La Encantada or Casas Adobes, our housewives would probably end up back in Orange County or Las Vegas for shopping trips.

The seven-episode series focuses on five housewives who live in an exclusive masterplanned enclave where mansions and foreign sports cars and SUVs are the norm.

Most of the original housewives are back, Vicki Gunvalson, Jeana Keough and Lauri Waring as well as Tammy Knickerbocker, from the second season. New this year is Tamra Barney, a real estate agent with four kids, who in show promos, has already proclaimed herself “the hottest housewife” in the O.C.

Though most of the housewives are mothers, to call them “housewives” is a bit deceptive, because they don’t really stay at home.

Most of them have careers in insurance, real estate or marketing. But why focus on a show that’s all about serious business women when there’s a reality show out there featuring California blondes who don’t mind being called MILFs, as discussed in a few episodes last season.

We’ll see what topics pop up for the housewives starting tonight.
