UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Rockin' the night away

jcommings

I’m getting old.

I remember when I could force my body to stay awake long past midnight on New Year’s Eve, because it was always fun to count down to the next year with my mom and Dick Clark while eating Tostino’s Pizza Rolls.

But I haven’t been able to make it past 11:00 recently. Is it because the shows have gotten boring? Or am I so out of touch with pop music that I don’t care to see a hot young thing shakin’ it like a Polaroid picture?

But I am actually kind of excited to see Ryan Seacrest and Dick Clark ham it up on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” if only to see Dick sort of officially hand over the reins. And plus, I’m always drawn to Ryan’s metrosexuality-ness.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Carson Daly. Um, didn’t he have some MTV show? And someone told me his late-late-late-late-late night talk show is still on, somewhere between the Restasis ads and the Ron Popeil infomercials. But I’ve never found him someone that could keep my eyes open in the wee hours, and I don’t care if he did get Panic! At the Disco.

Ryan’s got Christina Aguilera and the cast of the Broadway show “Jersey Boys,” which won the Tony for Best Musical. What else do you need?

Oh, yeah. The Tostino’s Pizza Rolls.

The festivities start at 10 p.m. on ABC (Seacrest) and NBC (Daly).

  1. Am I the only one who finds Carson Daly really hard to look at since his drastic weight loss? He scares me now.
