No real surprises at the University of Arizona by way of people signing / not signing with the basketball team – everyone that was expected (Jeff Withey, Brandon Jennings, Brendan Lavender and Emmanuel Negedu.)
Today marked the first day that athletes could sign with prospective schools and the interim head coach of the Wildcats, Kevin O’Neill, made the day noteworthy by holding a press conference at McKale Center to announce the class and speak a little bit about each recruit. The video can be found here
Overall O’Neill seemed pretty psyched about this incoming class, using it to send praise to Lute Olson for still being able to bring in the type of class that can compete on a national level. Check out the video for comments on each of the players as well.
In addition to the basketball signing day, local gymnast Cristy Dahlquist started her collegiate career off by signing with the Boise State Broncos. That video can be found here
Dahlquist is rather rare in the Tucson area, that being a collegiate gymnast getting a full ride. Not only was she one of just two gymnasts to be recruited to Boise State (while she turned down Ohio State, Arizona, Cal and Arizona State) but she is just one of a handful of local gymnasts to be moving on to the next level.
Since high schools in the region do not carry prep gymnastics programs, many find it difficult to find the facilities and the drive to succeed in such a way to get noticed by collegiate scouts. Dahlquist trains at Gymnastics World East on Irvington Park and Speedway in Tucson.
