State Rep. Marian McClure (R-District 30) has confirmed that she is considering a run for the Corporation Commission. But she won’t say much more than that.
“The more I think about it, the more I like it,” she said.
McClure is termed out in her Eastside District next year. Her other opportunity is to switch over to the Senate by running for Tim Bee’s seat in 2008. But McClure may be under pressure to stay out of that race. Republican puppet masters would rather see her seatmate, Rep. Jonathan Paton, go for the Senate seat as they groom him for a Congressional bid sometime in the next decade (the prospects of him seeking the CD8 GOP nomination next year are looking rather slim).
McClure and GOP Reps. Bob Robson and Bob Stump are considering running as a team. If she did run, and win, McClure would be the sole member of the commission from Southern Arizona.
She said she’s interested in the job because she has a passion for consumer issues (she’s pushing a ballot measure that would seek to kill the payday loan industry).
Don’t expect an announcement until January.
“There’s always the possibility that I’ll decide to stay home,” McClure added.
