UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

The Arizona Daily Star's Brian Pedersen is a mild-mannered reporter by day, but by night (and weekend) he is an aspiring semi-professional poker player. Or at least he thinks so.

Southern Arizona shutout

After a very successful run by Tucson-area poker players during the preliminary events at the 2008 World Series of Poker, the Main Event proved to be a disappointment for local runners, as none managed to cash in the world’s largest tournament.

The top local finisher was Frank Estrella, who got into the final 800 (666 reached the money) but had his pocket aces cracked by pocket 10s.

Estrella’s knockout was felt hard by 47 other local players, who each had a piece of him as part of the Tucson Poker Club. That club’s annual WSOP Main Event prize package winner goes to the tournament and gets half of anything he wins, while the other 47 qualifiers for that tournament split the remaining 50 percent, if any money is won.

That’s all for now, poker lovers! – BJP
