The NBA feedback Chase Budinger received has pushed him back to school, after all.
According to Draft Express, Budinger withdrew his name from the Draft just before the 2 p.m. deadline today. UA spokesman Richard Paige confirmed the decision by sending out a release this afternoon.
Budinger was expected to leave if assured he would be a Top 20 pick, and he spoke confidently about staying in the draft when he worked out for the Suns last week. But he slipped during the course of the six workouts he took, according to many of the mock drafts, and was looking at being a late first-round pick with no apparent guarantee that he would be in the first round.
As Marcus Williams found out last year, slipping into the second round and failing to make the San Antonio Spurs roster out of training camp, that’s a scary place to be.
SWEET……

Glad to hear he made a decision based on reason after evaluating all potential options. It seems as things are not as bad in the UA program as many tried to lead us to believe. If he really wanted to leave he could’ve done so, so hopefully he is now motivated to continue to improve as a player. The only missing piece is Jennings, and if he does indeed put on an Arizona uniform next season, the program will be just fine…and probably much better than just fine.
— darren 06/16/2008 02:24 PM #
What do you know Marco was right.
Marco, I’ll give you mad props for your prediction. I know no one else will.
— chi_cat 06/16/2008 02:33 PM #
Phew! I guess I was confused on that one. I thought he was gone. But based on what was being written, he was consistently talked about being picked in the twenties, he most likely made the right decision.
I’m happy as a Zona fan, but feel for the tough decision CB faced and made. This is great news for the program and next year’s team. I feel fortunate to have had such a thoughtful young man in the program for two years, and I’m ecstatic that he’ll be back for one more year.
— confused, maybe not 06/16/2008 02:34 PM #
Great for the program. I hope it pays off for Chase as well. Let’s get a title and have him be a lottery pick.
— Eric 06/16/2008 02:37 PM #
As Budinger found out(and what many here already knew), he still needs lots of work. He had no choice but to come back.
— vegasallen 06/16/2008 02:37 PM #
Perhaps this will help right the recruiting ship since the UA will essentially be starting from scratch now… A strong season this year and an end to all the BS that has surrounded the program this year may allow Olson to salavge the sinking ship before he retires.
If Jennings doesnt qualify though, I think we look at another season of mediocrity and barely squeaking in to the tourney again, if at all.
— ranger4059341 06/16/2008 02:44 PM #
A lot of fans owe Chase a big thank you for saving the U of A season. Chase was good enough to be a top 20 pick and hopefully AZ fans will stop talking bad about him for testing the waters. Chase will be better from testing the waters and he now knows what the NBA is looking for from him. He will be better next year.
— Matt 06/16/2008 02:47 PM #
Marco, Congrats on getting one right.

I think I’m just happy to see Hansen is very distraught.
I am a firm believer in free speech and enjoy reading all opinions on this blog, but really, Hansen you need to move somewhere else.

Bruce, do you know if Crawford has chosen a school and/or has a school in mind? If not, I hope Lute’s recruiting him. My guess is that he won’t have to take a year off with the coaching change at Indiana.
— confused, maybe not 06/16/2008 02:50 PM #
Fans also owe Chase Dad a apology for ripping him for Chase thinking about staying in the draft
— Matt 06/16/2008 03:02 PM #
In retrospect, I don’t think Zona has a scholarship to offer Crawford for next season. Am I right on this?
Matt, only a few fans owe CB and crew an apology. Most of us have been quite supportive of his swim through the pre-draft pool.
— confused, maybe not 06/16/2008 03:07 PM #
Should we be concerned that no major outlets (outside of Draft Express) are reporting this yet? Seems like espn, yahoo, and sportsline have confirmed the other “guys on the fence”. Why not Chase?
As for UA fans thanking Chase for saving our season- I don’t think that really entered into his decision. If he did pull out of the draft, it was due to lack of a guarantee for a good selection and a guaranteed contract. That’s not a cynical view, just a realistic one. If he were guaranteed top 20, he would be gone. He is staying for his own interests, not UA’s. It’s not selfish; at least, no more selfish than rabid fans begging him to stay and pass up boatloads of cash in the NBA. It is the reality of current day college basketball. I don’t think anyone expected Chase to stay for 3 years when he first came here. A variety of circumstances led to this. As a devout fan of the program and the players, I hope that this works out well for everyone involved. I hope that Chase has a standout year and helps revitalize an Olson-led program. That helps the program, the school, and hopefully benefits Chase in terms of draft position next year, and his ability to make it in the NBA and make a ton of cash. Good luck, Chase.

It’s a GOOD DAY to be a Wild Cat! I guess all the blogging supporting Chase to go look and do the right thing couldn’t have hurt. You KNOW they will get this Brandon Jennings eligibility thing taken care ASAP! Especially now wih the Chase coming back! We lost one to the Draft this year; how many did UCLA loose? Can’t wait to see what Dunlap can do to help Chase. GO CATS!

Anyone else feel that as time went on, the likelihood of him leaving went down? Also, his dad kept talking, but Chase himself didn’t say much, which was an indicator as well.

My opinion of Chase just went up by a long ways. He shows new maturity by recognizing the flaws and deficiencies in his game or at least listening to others who pointed it out to him. I hope he is rewarded for his decision so it can be an example to others who can get better by staying in school, not riding a bench somewhere. He will be so rewarded if he works on his defense, rebounding and toughness. If he improves in those areas, as many have pointed out, he will be a much more deisrable and valuable player.
— Ron W 06/16/2008 03:53 PM #
Budinger makes it appear as though he was holding a clinic for sports writers. Hardly any of them predicted he would stay. Looks like Lute was persuasive. Hopefully the Wildcats will benefit, but he sure doesn’t look like a winner when he plays… no aggression. Fades early. No defense. No will to win. Most of all, no love for the game.
— Ray Bay 06/16/2008 04:04 PM #
The Budingers probably saw that picks 18 – 21 are tenuous because of the “padding” done by NBA scouts/execs (and overseas players) to boost up the candidate pool. At least they were smart enough to recognize it. Chase would have taken a huge hit to drop to the second round and the possibility/probability was there. Good move and welcome back Chase.
Get to work on your D.
— WildCatinFlag 06/16/2008 04:38 PM #
I think he has flaws but UA fans shouldn’t question his heart. He’s only 20 yrs old and he has things to work on but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have no heart or doesn’t love the game. He going to be there 1 more year and you guys should be glad that he back and most likely better from testing the waters.
— Matt 06/16/2008 04:40 PM #
Let get real Chase would have never gone in the second round. You can work on defense and players do develop in the NBA. He has problems he can work on it’s not like teams saw no defense and say he can’t get better.
— Matt 06/16/2008 04:44 PM #
Man can Hanson be wrong more often http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/hansen/243888. I am so sick of that negitive nancy. His hate of the UofA basketball program is pathetic. Put Hanson on the back page not the front.

Great news, and great choice Chase! Chi Cat and Confused, thanks for the props.
Though the naysayers will crawl back out from their holes in short time, this should quell any rumors that our program is in turmoil. A couple points:
I posted this a few months ago, but for those in the know knew that Chase was only going to stay in the draft if he was guaranteed to be a lottery pick. Not sure why this is hard to understand, but that is why he chose to work out for the teams that had higher picks than what most experts projected for him to be picked around 18-25. He was simply looking for a guarantee from the lottery teams. Looks like the visit with the Suns did some good as well…
Secondly, for those that think the AZ Star has a certain vendetta against Arizona’s Men’s Basketball need not look further than the article headlines. None of them have retracted or replaced Hansen’s article from yesterday, and what do they hide behind? Oh that’s right, they don’t post “rumors” or until something is confirmed. Well AZ Star Employee’s, try googling Chase Budinger and hit “News” and see how many media sources are reporting articles relating to Chase returning. All that the Star has done is posted a Blog Heading. No links from the front page, no headline. Hmm, interesting you guys really are the last to know anything newsworthy.
As for the doubters like that Crazy voice, hopefully you will be happy that I was right…again. Don’t forget about my warnings about Kevin O’Neill, and that Lute would return. Pretty much everything I’ve gone with (last seasons projections are a wash once Lute stepped completely away) has been right on. I won’t toot my own horn, but toot, toot.
Jennigs is the final piece to this puzzle, but things are looking extremly bright in Tucson and I can’t wait to see these kids in Summer Pro league.

Marco, even a blind SNAKE finds it’s prey once in a Blue Moon. Your FG% regarding forecasts surrounding the Wildcat hoops program is still less than 32 PERCENT.
Nonetheless, welcome back Chase and look for Olson’s squad to continue The Streak, baby.
As for the hate fest regarding Wildcat basketball. RAY BAY-post 19 above- is the EPITOME of a faux pas cheerleader. The last three years all he’s done is posted “negativity!!” It’s an embarrassment that there are more phoney Arizona bandwagoneer’s whom share the same dense, mentality as Raybay- post 19.
But then again, the “snake” raybay is probably missing a light bulb or two in the grey matter. LMFAO!!!

Great news about Chase. I am actually shocked. Good for him he made a smart financial decision because he will improve and he will win with Jennings and Hill alongside him. Those of you who think that he won’t improve his weaknesses (rebounding, a dominating mentality, lateral quickness) next year are kidding yourselves. Lute’s system, practice, and simple maturity and growth for the game will immensely help Chase.
Also, I have a question on an article right now on goazcats.com. I don’t have a membership for their website but on the heading it says one of the players is thinking about transferring, who is it?
— Nick 06/16/2008 06:16 PM #

— Bruce Pascoe 06/16/2008 06:47 PM #
Bruce- No; my day time IP address is banned for some reason or another. I am posting from a home PC right now. Not sure what the deal is, but not overly surprised.

Bruce, thanks for getting back to me.
To others who continually bash Hansen, Bruce and Star sport’s reporting, I like Hansen’s articles, even though I disagree with him at times. He is a columnist, which means he speculates, conjectures and tries to generate discussion. His job isn’t to always get it right, but to make plausible guesses that are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. When he riles (sp?) us up, that means he’s doing his job.
Bruce does not speculate in his Star articles, although he may quote others who are speculating. (That’s his job.) He is an excellent sports reporter. And he does not report rumors, which is why he delayed reporting CB’s decision on the Star. But his blog is another ball game. He makes plausible conjectures, reports facts, rumors, etc.. which generates discussion and keeps all of us going in the off season.
Bruce, I’ve said it before and I bet I’ll say it again. Thank you for providing us with this forum and for orienting our discussions with your excellent posts. Hats off to you!
— confused, maybe not 06/16/2008 07:50 PM #
“Budinger Has Change of Heart” ??? No he didn’t!!! Another misleading headline trying to cover up previous wrong assumptions and negative predictions.
Chase tested the waters and didn’t hire an agent because he wasn’t sure where he would be taken in the draft. When ALL the quotes from Chase’s interview in Phx were reported (but not in the ADS) it was clear that he was unsure whether to stay or go, but all the negative Nancys were wrong. Again.
Voice of the Lunatic has the gall to try to put down Marco again? When he was right again? He sounds as stubborn as Bozo was in using a zone. Just another Bozo. Very tiring reading his inane comments.
Great decision Chase. You will go much higher next year and you will have a great time playing for Lute again on a very good team.
— Taco Bill 06/16/2008 09:14 PM #
I don’t understabd this Matt guy saying UofA fans owe Chase abd his dad an apology.
Do you really think they have time to read blogs of our opinions when they’re trying to establish a career.
If anyone owes an apology, its KO for not developing him for the NBA and making a better season and Suzuki for not training him to have more endurance.
Smartest move Chase by coming back so you can have better stats (un-Lamar Odom like 11 ppg) against Stanford and UCLA next year. Next smart move, fire Suzuki.
— DesertStorm Wildcat 06/16/2008 09:34 PM #
Confused, Definitely #32,
Maybe if the ADS didn’t pull Hansen’s blog spreading rumors of an 18 year old as a cheater, you might feel differently. Really a low blow to try to ruin a person’s reputation without anything more than speculation. You obviously overlook a lot if don’t think Hansen has printed a lot of innuendo trying to hurt Lute and the basketball program. He wrote an entire article doing nothing more than asking leading questions that would make players and coaches all look bad if people jumped to the conclusions that Greg wanted us to jump to. He’s a hack.
When the Citizen buys out the Star, Greg will be gone.
— Taco Bill 06/16/2008 09:39 PM #
He made the right decision…and probably should plan on playing through his senior year. I have a feeling that Mike D is searching for the missing piece offshore…that’s where he got his talent at Metro state.
— billyb 06/16/2008 09:42 PM #
If anything, look what happen to OJ Mayo having a leech around like Trent Suzuki (driving force for Chase to test the draft so he can get paid).
Plus, what strength and endurance has Suzuki really provided?
REFUND!
Trent will get him in trouble and the program on probation.
— DesertStorm Wildcat 06/16/2008 09:45 PM #
Fantastic news, but I’m still shocked. Based on Chase’s comments after working out with the Suns, it looked like he had put Arizona behind him. However, the past is the past, and the program sorely needed this victory. Welcome back Chase.

The Az Republic, The Tucson Citizen, Prescott Courier, East Valley Tribune all had a added a late piece on this news. But where was this paper? On a blog, hidden away by the pouting sports reporters. I think I’ll not bother to read this rag anymore.

I don’t see anything about that on goazcats.com.
They have a deal for a 7 day trial, and I was going to check that out, but I don’t see that anywhere. You have a date on that story?
#37,
How do you know Suzuki did anything wrong?
— chi_cat 06/17/2008 05:34 AM #
My gosh, simmer down on the anti Hansen retoric. Almost everyone blogging here had predicted Budinger would go, including myself. I never thought that his stock would have fallen so much as a result of his workouts, but should have guessed it when he wasn’t invited to the combine.
What he does with the extra year will be interesting. Clearly he can shoot, but his defensive flaw will still be there simply because he isn’t quick and loses that “first step”. Olson says they are going to “have fun” this coming year. Well, we’ll see if that translates into wins. At best, assuming Jennings learns to spell his name, the club will be about par with last year, in a conference that doesn’t drop all that much.
— AdmanS 06/17/2008 07:00 AM #
What’s wrong adman, are you the poor sap responsible for selling ad space on Hansen’s page?
When presented with any fact, Hansen opines on it in the way portraying the u of a basketball program in the most negative way possible because Lute has called him out as the gossip-mongering hack that he is.
I had been a life-long reader of Greg Hansen. But after: (1) the irresponsible way that he handled Lute’s request for privacy, (2) the recent article containing mere “suggestions” based on a conversation with Danial Dillon without attributing any source or facts, like journalists are supposed to, and (3) posting, then removing, anonymous blogger comments from another website of questionable repute in an attempt to further portray Lute in a negative light, I have to say that regardless of the content of his message, I have to agree with Lute.
By sacrificing any sense of journalistic principle and his hackneyed attacks on Lute and his program, regardless of their merit, Hansen has proved he is a hack.

My question is…
How does he keep his job?
— CatFan4Life 06/17/2008 09:41 AM #
Guys, guys, guys. Hansen writes an opinion column. He is not a cheerleader. Sometimes he is right and sometimes he is wrong. Get over it.
Funny, though, if he is so bad, and y’all are so offended, how come you continue to opine on the AZSTARNET blog.
By the way, Marco has ultimate scoreboard for the Buddinger prediction. Nuff said.

Good Boy Chase! Finally some good news around the CATS. Maybe it starts a trend. I was not feeling very good if he left for the NBA but now it looks better, maybe not a Pac-10 championship or a deep run in March, but this team can now compete and will get me to buy the College Baskeball package again from Direct TV.
— Wildcatike 06/17/2008 11:00 AM #
Ah. Unlike the World Trade Center buildings, the b-ball program is not in a free fall. Why? because Lute is made of carbon steel, and Dunlap, plus a great “core” of returning players (in a depleted league), has stopped burning and is ready to be reconstructed. A couple of defections aren’t hot enough to burn this program to the ground. If you’re looking for an inside job here, look elsewhere. Lute was never going to let the twin towers fall.
— Conspiracy Cat 06/17/2008 06:46 PM #
This is huge for my Cats! Lute job well done! I am happy that we shall see Negedu on the bench and Chase and Brandon in Arizona jerseys. Just think we are losing an All American and adding one right back. As long as no one gets injured – I see a better season.

From ESPN:
Brandon Jennings, who signed a letter of intent to play at Arizona, is looking at the unprecedented option of playing overseas next season to get ready for the 2009 NBA draft if he’s not eligible to play for the Wildcats next season.
Jennings told ESPN.com that he is exploring the possibility of a professional basketball career. Jennings’ mother, Alice Knox, has retained an attorney, Jeffrey Valle, to help look into the possibility that Jennings could play professionally in Europe while he waits to become eligible for the 2009 NBA draft.
Jennings, who is from the Los Angeles area but played the last two seasons at Oak Hill Academy (Va.), turns 19 on Sept. 23 and would need to spend one year out of high school and be 19 to be eligible for the 2009 draft.
The 6-2 Jennings is rated as the top point guard in the class of 2008 by ESPN.com. Jennings scored 12 points, had nine assists and six turnovers in the McDonald’s All-American game in Milwaukee March 26.
“It’s something I’m considering now,” Jennings said. “I still want to go to Arizona but if things don’t go right, I’m considering going overseas.”
Jennings said he will get his standardized test results back next Thursday. This is the third time he has taken a standardized test. Jennings said he was red-flagged for a jump in his score from the first to the second test. He said he didn’t know his scores.
“The first time I took it I didn’t try, the second time I did so I had to take it a third time,” Jennings said.
Arizona assistant coach Mike Dunlap said Friday that the staff was well aware that Jennings was looking into playing overseas.
“He’s creating an option if things fall apart,” Dunlap said. “I get that.”
But Jennings is slated to be in Tucson on Monday to start summer school. He has been admitted to the institution. It’s unclear what kind of affect having him on campus would have on Jennings’ decision — assuming he shows up.
Jennings has been staying with New Jersey Nets point guard Marcus Williams while playing in a summer league in the area in the tri-state area. He is close friends with Williams’ father, Kelly, who is from Los Angeles as well.
Jennings said the professional players he has played with both in the New York-New Jersey area and back in Southern California told him he could compete with players overseas.
“Mentally I know I can play in the NBA, but physically is where it would hit me,” Jennings said.
Jennings and his mother, Alice Knox, said that Jennings probably would have declared for the NBA draft had the new rule not been put in place two seasons ago (one year out of school and at least 19 in the calendar year of the draft).
Jennings originally committed to USC before changing his commitment to Arizona. He said had coach Lute Olson not returned from a year-long absence then he wouldn’t even consider playing for the Wildcats. He said that with rising junior forward Chase Budinger deciding to withdraw from the NBA draft and return to school the Wildcats would have a chance to be an elite team next season. Jennings would be the lead guard next to experienced players Nic Wise, Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill in the post, making Arizona a potential top 25 team.
“Either (option) is good for me,” Jennings said. “I just think I would develop more if I went overseas and I would have played pro ball for a year. But if I went to Arizona we would have a good team because Chase is coming back.”
Valle said that the family is looking at all of the pros and cons and is trying to get a pulse on the interest from international team. Valle said Jennings doesn’t have an agent.
“It’s an alternative approach,” said Valle, a L.A. based family attorney. “It makes sense. We’re trying to get the eligibility issues sorted out. The main thing is that he’s considering doing something different.”
Jennings and Knox both cited renowned grassroots basketball creator Sonny Vaccaro’s insistence that going overseas should be a viable option to combat the new draft rule for high school seniors talented enough to play in the NBA but prevented to do so for at least a year.
Reached Friday, Vaccaro said he hasn’t advised Jennings. But when told of Jennings considering this option he said, “It makes sense. It’s one of the smartest things I’ve heard. It’s a viable thing. I have personally spoken to teams internationally in Europe, Asia and Africa who interested in this (taking high school graduates).”
Vaccaro said that high school graduates weren’t ready to make the jump overseas the past two classes (2006 and 2007 high school seniors) because the NBA draft rule was so new. But now he said they are catching up and the “kids know it’s a business. They see this as an option to work, a viable option.”
But making this happen for Jennings is still a tough chore. Multiple NBA executives told ESPN.com Friday that in order for a high school senior to get a true picture of which teams were interested, then he would have to sign with an agent who is connected with overseas teams. The NBA executives said that teams in Europe aren’t designed to just sign up an 18-year old American. They have junior programs where younger players go through a system to get to the primary club team. But if an agent were working for Jennings then they might be able to secure a deal, although playing time might be an issue.
The other option for Jennings if he’s ineligible is to go to the NBA developmental league. He would be eligible since he’s a high school graduate but he wouldn’t be able to get called up to an NBA roster. He would be able to play in the D-League and then go through the 2009 NBA draft. Former Iowa State guard Mike Taylor is doing that after he was dismissed from school, went to the D-League but couldn’t get called up to a roster. He is eligible for the draft next week.
The problem with Jennings playing in the D-League, according to a number of NBA sources, is that he would be a potential target for players who would look at embarrassing Jennings as a way to increase their stock. The D-League is filled with players trying to make a living and one source said it could get rough for Jennings.
Knox reiterated that her son has no issue traveling the globe. She said that she has consulted with a number of former coaches for Jennings and the move was endorsed.
“Brandon mentioned players like Tony Parker and Jose Calderon, point guards he admires who developed their game overseas and had no college,” Knox said. “Brandon’s main goal is that he wants to play professional basketball to take care of his family.”
“The reason why I would consider going overseas is to play pro ball for year and develop,” Jennings said. “I just want to be ready next year (for the draft) and come out and show I don’t have any weaknesses.”
Jennings said that if he were eligible at Arizona he would probably play only one season — a season that the Wildcats were counting on with Jennings to help make them offset the loss of freshman Jerryd Bayless and keep Arizona and Olson going back to the NCAAs yet again.
If Jennings does choose Europe, whether he’s eligible or not, then he would be a trend setter, although it’s too early to say if he would have any followers. Jennings is in a tough situation where he doesn’t know if he’s eligible or not. He’s looking for options.
“And I hope to know what I’m doing by July,” Jennings said. “I want to get this story out, get some feedback and know what’s out there for me before I make my decision.”

I don’t know if there is an actual threshold for the SAT that would disqualify Jennings from playing Division ! basketball. The U of A does not have a minimum requirement. In any case, it is perfectly reasonable for Jennings to consider alternatives if he is prevented from playing for Arizona by some NCAA rule. Jennings is a young man who happens to posess the talent that could earn him a lot of money after one year out of high school. Playing for the U of A as a point guard is his safest and best choice to further his career if that option is open. He would get great coaching and he can follow a proven path to the NBA and even have a good time on top of everything else. The choice is going to be dictated by the results of his SAT and that cannot be influenced at this point. So it is just wait and see what the results are next Thursday. He’ll only be at the U of A for one year and Lute and the team need to adjust to that reality and make the best of it. There is always the chance that he may stay longer, but that would probably only happen if there were weaknesses in his game that more coaching would improve.
