UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Rockin' with Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney can swoon a tear out of the most hardened heart, but don’t expect a lot of lovey-dovey, cry-in-my-beer ballads when he and his cohorts play the University of Phoenix Stadium on Saturday.

In a phone interview from his tour bus last Friday, the country superstar said his stadium show is off-the-charts high-energy. He plans to squeeze in two, maybe three ballads, he said. He recently added his Top 10 single “Better As A Memory” to the playlist, and “I may do ‘Blue Chair,’ I’m not sure. For the most part, it’s a high-energy show,” he said.

Chesney’s Glendale stop is one of 14 stadium concerts he will do this year.

“I’ve gotten more used to” playing stadiums, he said. “The first year we did it about three or four years ago there was a learning curve just in connecting with everybody. I think me and the guys have that down now. We spent so much time playing arenas and outdoor amphitheaters, we were pretty comfortable with ourselves up there on stage. Then all of a sudden we had another 20,000 to 30,000 people to sing to. It was a little different. Plus, there was a lot more ground to cover for me, and that’s tough ’cause I can’t sit still and listen to music at the same time. But they are great right now. The crowds are amazing. It’s a lot of fun to watch.”

Saturday’s concert runs from 3-11 p.m. The lineup includes Keith Urban, Sammy Hagar, Gary Allan and LeAnn Rimes.
