UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

RETIRED BLOG - Former AZNightBuzz editor Jorge Ribas looks through the spindle hole of life and ponders his place in the universe, the fleeting popularity of the flugelhorn, and whether vinyl can exist in this downloadable world.

You're not the Boss of me!

Turning down the iMplants sticking out of his head – which make him look like Billy Dee Williams’ buddy from Empire Strikes Back – young Two-Oh will sit at my knee as I put down my delicious bowl of Soylent Green and impart the tale of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Sones, boleros and a Cuba Libre! (with audio)

07/18/2006 09:34 AM

One album I found is called Ecos de Cuba (Echos of Cuba) by the Trio Matamoros, which features band leader Miguel Matamoros, guitarist Rafael Cueto and percussionist Siro Rodriguez. The band performed from 1925 until 1969.

The Smurfs they are a-Smurfin'

It’s the Smurfing Sing Song [as advertised on television]! I don’t remember getting this fine piece of vinyl, but the release date on the back says 1979, so I would have been about 3. And even though I was more into the Clash and Elvis Costello back then, I was still a huge Smurfs fan.

The long-dormant Longplay returns for with this note I heard on KXCI this morning: PDQ Records & Tapes is having an inventory sale Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You can call me Jorge

The next morning, feeling not so fresh, we (and by “we,” I mean “they”) decided to go to Graceland. I was having no part of it. I’m not an Elvis fan, but more important, I strongly dislike theme parks. And that’s essentially what Graceland is, a big ol’ Elvis theme park.
