Joyce Bertschy has lived in Picture Rocks for 25 years and has developed an uncanny ability to find unburied treasure, packrat middens under the hood of her car and cholla balls. She is a news assistant at the Arizona Daily Star.
If you live in my neighborhood it’s highly unlikely that you know me or have seen me. It’s true that people who live in town may not know the people next door. Out here, it’s a walk or even a hike to the next door. People always ask me why my husband and I live so far out of town. Maybe we’re anti-social and would rather have major abdominal surgery than go to a cocktail party. We might be gun enthusiasts, up at all hours of the night, patrolling our compounds for signs of intruders. We could be seeking desert solitude and a space to breathe.
We might be farmers, horse breeders or raise goats. Of course, we may be one of the many who have moved out here because we belong to the dark side. We may be drug manufacturers, breed dogs for fighting or hoard animals. Maybe, it’s simply part of our American dream to own a house and the land. Or possibly, it’s none of the above.
Joyce! Still living out there where you can actually breathe and see the stars, huh? I say good for you! I moved to a place a lot like that, and found some peace and quiet.
Howdy neighbor … There seems to be certain things many of us out here have in common.
Like, not spaying and neutering and not keeping our animals inside fenced yards or inside.
Just irresponsible and lazy, I guess.
