Homegrown D-I Hoops Prospects

Name a significant Division-I men’s basketball player from Southern Arizona post-Sean Elliott. (And John Ash doesn’t count).

Coming up empty-minded?

You might have an answer when these local high school seniors find themselves on college rosters next year:

Terrell Stoglin, Santa Rita, Sr. (6-feet-1-inch, 180-pounds): Stoglin – the area’s most-wanted recruit since Elliott – committed to Gary Williams and Maryland right before Sean Miller signed at Arizona.

And Stoglin wasn’t swayed in April, telling the Star’s Patrick Finley that he was not wavering at all despite the new UA hire.

Curious to see how that develops for Stoglin – a sharp-shooting point guard who averaged 27-points as a junior and is ESPN’s 18th-rated PG in the country.

How legit is he? Two years ago, at a tourney in San Diego, a then-soph Stoglin rained in 34 points against DeMar DeRozan…DeRozan was the 9th pick in the NBA Draft last month.

Michael Perez, Pueblo, Sr. (6-3, 180): Perez wasn’t all over the lower-level Division-I recruiting scene as a junior last winter after sitting out his entire soph-year upon transferring from Tucson High to Pueblo.

That is changing.

In an email last to week, Perez wrote that he averaged 28.2 points at a tournament held at the University of San Diego – taking an unofficial visit with the Toreros – before scoring 31 per at a similar tourney at NAU.

Those are just two of the colleges that have approached the long-armed, combo-guard.

Other schools showing interest include: Northern Colorado, UTEP, Texas Tech, UC-Riverside, Boise State and Cal.

No offers yet, but plenty of attention. And it is only July.

Perez, who averaged 23.3 ppg last year – second only to Stoglin – enters next season as the area’s best-returning defender and is a serious riser.

Matt Korcheck, Sabino, Sr. (6-9, 200): Korcheck is long and slim and he rises off the floor very quickly for a player his size – the prototype for many dunks.

As with most high school big men, weight – the lack of enough – is an issue. But ESPN.com describes him as a future “fine player at the mid-major level.”

Korcheck appears headed to a Division-I hoops program next year. Utah State already offered.
