Top 10 tricky to pick

Casey Crowe

I already know what you’re thinking: The list below is incomplete, wrong, a travesty.
Somewhere in the Tucson-Metro area, one of Southern Arizona’s finest gridiron athletes got completely snubbed, not dubbed one of the Star’s 10 Players to Watch.
And, the truth is, you are absolutely right.
In whittling down the candidates to just 10 — which were chosen from previous years’ performances, coach input, recruiting write-ups and first-hand eyewitness — there are always at least a handful of extremely deserving players that are left off.
However, for my $5 (the price of a regular season H.S. football game ticket), these are the most intriguing players to watch around town:

Ka’Deem Carey, So., RB, Canyon del Oro — Two words: the Flip.
Adam Hall, Sr., WR/DB/KR, Palo Verde — If USC wants you, you know you’re among the elite. And Hall is a unique brand of athlete. Blessed with height/size, speed, and leaping ability, players like this don’t come around often.
Jake Fischer, Sr., LB/RB, Ironwood Ridge — The best defensive player in the city. Period.
Christian Ramirez, Sr., RB, Salpointe Catholic — The every-man star of the group, Ramirez is a workhorse, a grinder and a slasher. Not real flashy but oh, so consistent.
Seth Mejias-Brean, Sr., QB, Cienega — If you’re looking for a QB that can do a little bit of everything, Mejias-Brean is your man. He is almost as dangerous running around outside the pocket as he is unloading the ball from inside of it.
JJ Holliday, Sr., WR/DB, Santa Rita — Scurran called Holliday the best receiver he’s ever coached earlier this year. Strong praise considering Scurran has groomed a stable of Division-I athletes.
Laurence Gibson, Sr., DL, Sierra Vista Buena — Hidden down in Sierra Vista, Gibson doesn’t receive nearly the hype of the rest of the guys on this list. Trust me on this one: He’s a monster on the line.
Nick Marshall, Sr., K, Canyon del Oro — Kickers aren’t football players, right? Marshall proved that statement untrue when he courageously recovered his own onside kick in the 4A-I championship game last year to keep CDO’s title hopes alive.
Andy Garcia, Sr., RB, Nogales — I’m leading the campaign to nickname Garcia “the Nogales Nightmare.” An explosively-fast running back.
Josh Carter, Sr., OL/DL — For the rare-breed that loves to watch line play, Carter is the best in S. Ariz. Sabino’s Kyle Walker is a close second.

Those are my humble choices.
Tell us your picks for the rest of the best.
And for those players who were stiffed by these selections, feel free to use the perceived slight as fuel to show us that you belong in this class.
