Last week, Michael Jackson, "The
King of Pop," died after suffering
cardiac arrest. He was 50, and
preparing start a series of
comeback concerts.

Jackson's musical
accomplishments were many,
including the hits "Bad," "Billie
Jean," "Thriller" and "Shake Your
Body (Down to the Ground)." His
1982 album "Thriller" is the
best-selling album of all time.

He collaborated with Paul
McCartney, Quincey Jones, and
his sister, Janet Jackson.

He invented the moonwalk.

And while his behavior later in life
was bizarre, we prefer to focus
on the positives, like Jackson's
music, and his charity work.

In one instance, the two
overlapped. Jackson co-wrote the
charity single "We Are the
World," which was released
worldwide to aid the poor in
Africa and the United States.

Tell us who co-wrote the song for
a chance to win an audio book.

2009 Concert Wishlist

With things about to pick back up in the music scene after the annual holiday slow-down, it’s time to look ahead.

Congress, Plush, Solar Culture and the Rialto’s concert calendars are still looking pretty open for 2009, though we have some good CD release shows coming up with local acts like Garboski, Golden Boots and the Holy Rolling Empire.

That said, I’m just going to throw out some (mostly) national acts that would be cool to see stop through town and shows that would be awesome to see happen this new year.

  • Animal Collective
The new album is amazing (so I’ve heard), and even though the band doesn’t necessarily play cuts from the record it’s touring behind, I want to hear “My Girls” live. Now.

  • Deerhunter
From my count, this band hasn’t hit up Tucson once, opting instead for Phoenix. Why? No idea. I feel like they’re missing something. Let’s change that.

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Coming out with a new album this year and they haven’t been back here since an outdoor show at Congress that got shut down early for noise complaints a while back. Time for a return.

  • Arcade Fire
I’m fairly certain these guys won’t be touring this year and it’s a serious longshot, but it’s been wayyyyyy too long since that 2005 Solar Culture show.

  • M.I.A.
Probably not going to happen since she’s having a baby and rarely tours as it is, but damn. Come on.

  • Crystal Castles
Another band who has scheduled plenty of shows in Phoenix in the last year, but none in T-Town. Like Deerhunter, long overdue.

There’s definitely more I’d like to see play here this year, but these ones are jumping out right now…

  5. I would love to see Jack Johnson come here but who am I kidding. We won’t get many major names until they give a decent venue other than the outlandishly priced AVA
