RIP Bob Moran

Sad news to report: Bob Moran — the longtime reporter for The Arizona Daily Star and East Valley Tribune — passed away Tuesday from cancer. He was 55.

Bob was Mr. Football around these parts from 1980 until 1986, when he moved up Interstate 10 to cover Arizona State. Bob was a stellar beat reporter and fixture on the Pac-10’s weekly conference calls up until a few years ago, when stomach cancer forced him to step away from work. Bob’s legacy was secured in January, when representatives from the UA and ASU renamed the rivalry game’s MVP award after him.

I could write plenty about Bob, one of this profession’s true gentlemen and characters. But nothing I could muster would top the superb Scott Bordow, who sent Bob off with an all-timer this afternoon.

Rest in peace, Bob.

  2. Bob was one of my first reads as a young, second generation Tucsonan wanting to soak up all I could about The Rivalry Game.

Bob, like Hansen now—and especially on Sundays—just had a way of making you want to go right to the Sports Section, find his article and take it in one insightful, appetizing, strike-the-funny-bone, human-level word at at time.

And man it went so good with that first cup of coffee.

Bob was missed all those years he was at the Tribune and not at the Star, for sure.

And he’ll forever be missed now that he’s gone to the Big Sports Page In the Sky, we all know.

How ‘bout someone run a couple of his more classic UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA-ASWho?! stories, funnies and all?

You were one of the best.

May God bless you and keep you, Bob.

  4. Read Bob when he was with the Star. Then after he and we had both moved north- he to the valley, us to the Rim Country- I was able to read him again. His Wilbur and Sparky articles always brought a level of civility to the rivalry game that was and is sorely needed. Sad day.

  7. One of the most memorable times I spent with Bob was when we spent 3 hours one afternoon talking football with coach Eddie Robinson. Bob grew up a Southern Univ. fan in Baton Rouge, while Robinson, of course, coached rival Grambling.
Listening to Bob and Eddie talk about Louisiana football in the 60s was something I’ll never forget. When Bob talked football, he was just as comfortable talking to a legendary coach as he was talking with a “cub” reporter. God bless you, friend. You taught me as much about life as you did about football.
