Dan Berezowitz and the rumor mill ...

Nothing is yet official, but I’d like to pass along at least one rumor we’ve been hearing …

The Minnesota Star-Tribune will report Thursday that UA recruiting coordinator Dan Berezowitz is leaving the Wildcats to take the same position at the University of Minnesota.

I first heard this rumor late Wednesday, but have been unable to receive confirmation from either Berezowitz (left two messages), Mike Stoops (in Hawaii recruiting), and the Minnesota sports information department. A spokesman for new Minnesota coach Tim Brewster denied any reports that ‘Brez’ was had already been hired. He said Brewster will meet with Minnesota’s old assistants in the next week before proceeding. Any announcement would then be made via press release.

The Star-Tribune’s story quotes anonymous sources as saying Berezowitz was on his way to Minneapolis. The Arizona Daily Star does not use anonymous sources under any circumstances and, therefore, will not be confirming this story until we can get someone ON THE RECORD to say a move is coming. But it’s worth stating that this story is out there …

While we’re talking about assistants and their new jobs, UA defensive coordinator Mark Stoops has emerged as one of the top four or five candidates for the vacant head coaching job at Rice University. Stoops’ candidacy makes sense for at least one reason: Rice athletic director is Chris Del Conte, a former UA associate athlteic director. As a first-time AD, Del Conte will want to make a splash in his first major hire. A member of the Stoops family would do just that.

We’ll be following up on both stories, and more, tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted.

  2. That he was the last remaining link to the John Mackovic coaching staff here in Tucson. Enjoy.
