A local Southern Baptist Pastor is operating a Web site called puresextucson.com
Yes, it’s true. And the Rev. Jeremiah McDuffie isn’t shy about it, either. He’s taking out full-page ads in the Arizona Daily Wildcat and the Tucson Weekly to promote the series. The ads feature four feet in a suggestive post-coital-style pose.
Tucsonans will also be getting the ads in the mail — 35,000 puresextucson.com mailers are expected to arrive in local homes this week.
McDuffie, a twentysomething who heads The Element of Tucson church in Midtown, is launching a series in September that’s all about sex, hence the Web site.
“Sex wasn’t invented in a dark alley behind a porn shop. It’s part of God’s design,” the Web site says.
“In fact, this may shock you but God wants you to have great sex.”
Here’s a description of the program:
“During PURESEX we will ask some tough questions, and unravel the myths and confusion about sex. The teachings are compelling, easy to understand, and actually leave you inspired and wanting more.”
It all starts at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Rincon High School, 421 Arcadia Ave. and will continue every Sunday thereafter through Oct. 5.
Many churches, particularly evangelical Christian churches, meet in local schools rather than in a church. They pay rent to the school district. I wrote a story about this trend back in 2006.
The U.S. Supreme Court in 2001 ruled that excluding religious groups from meeting in taxpayer-funded schools would be a violation of First Amendment free-speech rights.
The Element began in Tucson last year as part of the Southern Baptist Convention’s aggressive church-planting program in Southern Arizona.
Um, Patrick, your tax dollars are NOT being spent for church services. The story says that the group pays rent to the school district.
Not to mention that Christians pay taxes, too, so they have just as much right to use public facilities as you do. It’s that pesky First Amendment again…
Why are small minded people afraid to welcome a chance at true enlightenment? Because it is presented by a religious group? What is there to fear? Truth?
I really don’t like having my tax money spent to hold church services – who at TUSD approved this ?
