Web site touts walking away from homes

To people who stress about keeping up good credit scores, what this Web site advocates may sound unthinkable.

YouWalkAway.com promises to deliver peace of mind to people who owe more than their homes are worth and are behind on their mortgages. The answer: Give the house back to the bank, and live in it without making payments up until the lender takes it over.

“Is your home sinking under the waves of the real estate crash?” the site’s home page says. “Unshackle yourself today from a losing investment and use our proven method to Walk Away.”

The site promises to help stop harassing phone calls, provide a consultation with a real estate attorney, help repair credit, and provide information about when lenders plan to repossess houses.

But like the house-flipping advice gurus who helped get us into this mess, the YouWalkAway folks aren’t looking to lend their expertise for free.

It takes some hunting around on the site to find the price (look under the FAQ section): $995 “in most states,” or four payments of $249.

There has been a lot of talk lately about homebuyers “walking away” from their homes rather than continuing to make payments on mortgages that are more costly than the value of the home.

The Los Angeles Times checked out this notion recently and found no evidence of a trend toward “walking away.”

But then again, maybe the encouragement from groups like YouWalkAway hasn’t kicked in yet.

  1. That’s insane! Stop making payments and keep living in the house until the lender decides to kick you out?!? What if you’re at work when this happens? What do you do if this is sprung on you on a Friday evening?

Why would anyone follow this advice and think it’s a good idea?!?
