Checking the balance of my checking account yesterday, I noticed my stimulus check arrived.
Now, I had great plans for this check. I have been watching ads in the paper about
incentives for spending your check on grocery gift cards or big TVs.
I had made a list with a header of “Stuff I want” that included many of the things I would have bought this year if my conscience had allowed. I looked that over, pausing on each item to imagine myself with some shiny new Stuff.
I also spent time looking at Web sites showing sunny pictures of vacations on the beach. Then I switched to sites that showed pretty pictures of “budget” vacations on the beach.
My conscience made this little “ahem” noise and I sighed so loudly that my dog got worried.
I surfed over to YouShouldPayOffThatBalanceYouCarryOnYourVisaCard.com and hit the “PAYNOW” button.
It wasn’t fun to do the fiscally responsible thing, but it turns out this is the experience most Americans are having with their checks. It’s hard to believe I stimulated the economy at all with that mouse click.

The only one who’s going to be stimulated with my check is my student loan provider. So long stimulus package; I hardly knew ye!

I had a 2,400 tax bill (in addition to withholdings)this year so this helped cover that. If it ever arrives.
Bush — good riddance.
