Malicious Web ads that popped up in Tucson hitting thousands of users

Malicious online ads that drummed up criticism against Tucson Newspapers last week have spread across the Web, a British newspaper is reporting today.

The Register reports that thousands of PC users “have been duped into surrendering sensitive information and installing malicious software after falling victim to a complex scam that continues to plague well-known websites.”

A similar problem recently hit Tucson Newspapers, the agency that handles business operations for the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Citizen newspapers. While the company first said that suspected ads were not infecting computers, a further investigation showed that they could have been.

Tucson Newspapers has since removed the maliciously coded ads. But it is impossible to say how many people were affected by these and similar ads elsewhere on the Web.
