Are you a “lone wolf” or a “one-man band” in your business? Tell us how you make it work.
The U.S. Census Bureau just reported that a daily average of 2,356 people went into business for themselves in 2005.
There were 55,291 one-man and one-woman businesses in the Tucson metro area in 2005. The biggest categories here are real estate, of course, and also a category called “professional, scientific, and technical services.”
Other big sectors for local one-man bands include construction, health care, retail, and finance and insurance.
Nationwide, the number of lone-wolf businesses reached 20.4 million in 2005.
“Businesses without paid employees, known in the business industry as ‘lone wolves,’ had receipts of $951 billion and make up approximately 78 percent of the nation’s 26 million-plus firms,” according to the press release.
Tucson accounted for around $2.3 billion of those receipts.
