Corporation Commission town halls on rail issues

04/16/2007 06:00 AM

The Arizona Corporation Commission will hold a town hall meeting Wednesday (April 18) to talk about Union Pacific Railroad’s plans to expand by adding a second set of tracks in some parts of Arizona. Local officials and residents are invited to share comments and concerns. The ACC can’t dictate where a railroad runs, but it does oversee railroad safety. Through a relationship with the Federal Railroad Administration, the ACC oversees safe maintenance of signals, crossings, track, locomotives and cargo containers.

For background on the expansion, go to this Union Pacific site.

The Tucson meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Arizona Corporation Commission, 400 W. Congress St., room 222.

They’ve also planned similar meetings in Eloy and in Yuma. Here’s the info on those:

Yuma Town Hall

  1. That’s the last thing we need in this town is more railroad traffic. I live in Marana, and there is a stretch of railroad about three or four miles where there are upwards of 7 crossings. The requirement is that trains blast their horns 4 times at each crossing. With up to 40 trains a day coming just in that area, that’s 7×4 x 40, or 1120 train horn blasts (at > 90db) a day. Plus, with limited underpasses, the traffic backs up for blocks and blocks every few minutes it seems.
