In case you missed it, the New York Times caught up with the big holiday migration of Mexicans to Tucson for shopping. In a story published Dec. 23, John Dougherty, formerly of the New Times in Phoenix, writes: “Mexican shoppers with fists full of cash and long Christmas lists are pouring across the border into hotels, restaurants and shopping malls here, providing an economic boost in a downward spiraling economy.”
It’s not a surprising story for Star readers. We’ve written about shoppers from Northwest Mexico coming to Tucson again and again over the years, and that last story, by Gabriela Rico, seems like it might have inspired Mr. Dougherty.
Anyway, it’s interesting to see the NYT finds it newsworthy now. I guess it’s the recession angle.
Our own Star photographer Dean Knuth shot the pictures on a freelance basis for the Times.
