Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll has weighed in on the foreclosure front, saying he thinks the county needs to act as a “good broker” between troubled homeowners and lenders. He also says it’s time for the county to look at freezing foreclosure proceedings for 90 days to help workouts.
Carroll, who represents District 4, said he was shocked by the spike in foreclosures on his east side district. Foreclosures in District 4, which stretches from the foothills to the far east side and then down to Green Valley, are projected to hit 1,978 this year, according to the Southwest Fair Housing Council.
By comparison, there were 1,280 foreclosures in the district last year. So, that’s a projected increase of about 55 percent.
“We are concerned about the entire county,” Carroll said during a brief phone interview Tuesday. “The numbers don’t look good county-wide.”
The report also projects 8,590 foreclosures across the county by the end of the year, a sharp increase over last year.
Carroll said he just wanted to put forth some ideas about the foreclosure crisis for discussion. So far, though, he hasn’t gotten much response.
