This, it seems, is Down-With-Grupo-Mexico week from sea to shining sea. Opponents are lining up to bash the Mexican conglomerate’s previous management of Tucson-based Asarco LLC and to ask that a London-based conglomerate (and its Indian subsidiary) take control of Asarco instead.
On Monday, state legislators and local officials representing areas where Asarco has a presence held a press conference in Phoenix demanding that Grupo Mexico be rejected as Asarco’s future owner. They asked that Vedanta Resources PLC be selected by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court instead.
On Tuesday, United Steelworkers members picketed Asarco’s mines and other facilities around Southern Arizona, again rejecting Grupo Mexico and asking that Sterlite be named the new parent company.
Today, it’s John Sweeney’s turn. The president of the AFL-CIO (of which United Steelworkers is a member) issued a statement that, again, condemned Grupo Mexico and endorsed Vedanta’s bid for Asarco.
