States tackling impacts of illegal immigration in absence of federal action

It’s not just border states who are worried about the impacts of illegal immigration these days. In the absence of immigration reform by the federal government, states across the nation are trying to fill the void by passing state legislation.

A study released Monday by National Conference of State Legislatures shows that from January through July 2:

  • At least one piece of immigration related legislation has been enacted in 41 of the 50 states and introduced in all 50.
  • 1,404 pieces of legislation were introduced, nearly two and a half times more than in 2006.
  • 170 bills have been enacted, more than double the number in 2006; 84.

Of the 170 bills enacted:

  • 38 were resolutions
  • 35 were related to ID, driver’s licenses or other licenses
  • 26 were related to employment of illegal immigrants
  • 15 were aimed at denying public benefits
  • 15 were designed to stop human trafficking organizations.

From the report:
“The immigration-related legislation covers almost every policy arena relevant in state legislatures. Many states have focused on employment, health, identification and driver’s and other licenses, law enforcement, public benefits, and human trafficking.”

“Congress’ failure to enact comprehensive immigration reform has really forced the states’ hands,” said Texas Senator and NCSL President Leticia Van de Putte.  “Since the federal ship has sunk, there have been 50 lifeboats in the water seeking a solution.  Once again, states have taken the lead on one of the most critical public policy challenges facing our country.”

Here’s three articles on the report and trend:

  1. I see no harsh punishment placed on the employers. Look at Insolia, the New Bedford employer. He is walking around scot-free. He brought in illegal workers from Guatemala. He provided them false papers. He exploited them, making them work in filthy, unsafe conditions, refused them breaks and didn´t pay them overtime. He kept his government contract and is not in jail. Yet the workers and their families were whisked away in the night and taken to TX Detention Centers, no bond, imprisoned, with their families pending their court dates. These Detention Centers are torture chambers. This is what is wrong!!
We need to target the employers. They are the real villains here!!

  2. Dee should do her homework. The Texas detention centers, contrary to propaganda releases, are probably better places to “live” than the places they came from.

You know, any excuse made up or otherwise . . . .like how much harm a wall would do to the invironment and such other bilge!

  3. You left wing journalists just don’t understand the mood, and the justified anger, of the American People.

We Don’t Want what you euphamistically call “comprehensive immigration reform”. We want the borders secured, as we were promised in 1987, and all illegals who entered subsequent to that date to be deported.

Got it? You fooled us once. You got “comprehensive reform” in 1987 and then failed to complete your part of the bargain. You didn’t protect the border. You let 25 million more in.

No more promises, no more deals, no more “humanitarian” sob stories, no more selling out to the left wing who wants to Balkinize and destroy America, no more selling out to the right wing who wants to secure “Global” profits.

Got it? Get these illegals out of here before we start killing them. You won’t fool us again!

  4. Roy,
I agree with most of your post however, killing illegals makes little sense when you consider who you fingered. For the most part, they are capitializing on a system that has failed to enforce the law. The government, left and right wing of the political parties, and employers should be the first to be taken out. They are responsible for this mess.

The way I look at it, if employers want cheap labor they can move there business to other countries. The public is not resposible for a business to be profitable and the public should not subsidise a private business’s work force.

NAFTA, CAFTA, and other free trade agreements need to be killed. If a business wants to outsource, let them, but at the same time they should be restricted from doing business in the U.S.

This globalization dosen’t sit well with me. It benefits the elites and destroys the working class. Illegal immigration does the same. Illegal immigration and trade agreements should be the first priority by the public to have killed. The second priority, but equally important, should be the federal reserve.

Many people don’t know the federal reserve is a private consortium of banks with no oversight or disclosure. In simple terms, they coin and loan the money to the U.S. and we pay the debt and interests on it. The banks get richer while you the tax payer flips the bill.

  5. We can all help, anytime you see a business with illegals working for them or picking up day workers, call it in to ICE and follow-up on it. Also, never hire an illegal or spend your money with a business that you even suspect hires illegals.
