AUTHOR MAXINE MANNHEIM
I couldn’t tell you the number of times I have heard the phrase “Drama Queen” roll off some ones tongue. Have you ever heard anything to support the statement claiming that girls are more dramatic than boys? Any real evidence that explains why having an X chromosome consequently makes them more prone to gossip? I have always thought of it as a natural reaction, for people (men and women) to create drama and problems when they feel apathetic. However, recent studies state that while that’s true, there is more to the term “Drama Queen” than people might think. There have been numerous studies presenting information that support this famous expression.
“Men are different from woman. They are equal only in their common membership of the same species, humankind. To maintain that they are the same in aptitude, skill or behavior is to build a society based on the biological and scientific lie,” said Dr. Anne Moir and Dave Jessel, the doctors who co-wrote the popular novel, Brain Sex.
I have never paid much attention to the typecast that claims that girls are to blame for all the drama that runs around high school. But at the same time, I can never dismiss the thought entirely.
“They’re more sensitive, they get offended easily and love to talk about it afterwards,” said sophomore Kevin Moynhan.
It sounds logical to me, but whats to say boys aren’t just as sensitive? Apparently, science.
“At a few hours old, girls are more sensitive then boys to the touch. By the age of four, boys and girls usually play apart, having instituted their own form of infant sexual segregation. Boys tend not to bother whether or not they like any particular member of the gang-he’s included if he’s useful; girls exclude other girls because ‘they are not nice.’ Woman are better at picking up social cues, picking up important nuances of meaning from tones in voice or intensity of expression,” said Moir and Jessel. The differences between men and woman might be a bit stereotypical, but can also be scientifically proven. Girls are more dramatic than boys. The reason that the phrase doesn’t apply to men is simply because men just aren’t programmed to worry about that kind of thing. Interestingly enough, if the phrase “drama king” ever did come into existence it would be utterly misguided.
