FILM GURU: Opening this weekend (April 6th)
Robert Hamer 79 weeks ago

There is very little competition for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez this weekend. Grindhouse has been getting excellent reviews, with critics arguing over which film is actually better, "Planet Terror" or "Death Proof." The amazing footage, incredible buzz and a new theater experience will equal big bucks for the film.

In an attempt to cash in on anything biblical, The Reaping failed to deliver anything new or interesting, according to critics. Reviews say that it's riddled with cliché scenes and dialog, and the cheap "thrills" take this movie to a new level of bad moviemaking. The story is about a former Christian missionary who goes to investigate a small town which seems to be suffering from the ten biblical plagues.

For the kids, there is Firehouse Dog, about Hollywood's top canine teaming up with a young kid to get a firehouse back on its feet. Critics say the movie has a good plot and a few great scenes. Young children will probably enjoy this innocent little story.

Finally, Are We Done Yet? is also available, and tells the story of a man's suburban dream home becoming a riotous nightmare. This film is said to be as unoriginal as expected, and settles for mindless gags all the way through. But some people may enjoy this 90 minute flick for its simple story and characters.

In limited release, Richard Gere's The Hoax is available and could actually rival Grindhouse in quality. Gere plays Clifford Irving, whose faux autobiography of Howard Hughes was one of the greatest media scams in history. Also available in limited release is David Duchovny's The TV Set, about a writer who must navigate the hazardous path from script to production to prime time scheduling. Finally, there is Black Book, about a girl who narrowly survives the war in Holland and seeks revenge for her family's murders.

Grindhouse got great review today on NPR radio, and I think i will follow the critic advise to watch it on a movie theater instead of waiting for a dvd.

The box office results for Friday are in, and shockingly, Grindhouse ended up in fourth place!

Blades of Glory took first place with $8.9 million, followed by Meet the Robinsons with $6.9 million and Ice Cube's Are We Done Yet? with $5.4 million.

That's right, Are We Done Yet? beat Grindhouse, continuing the pattern of unoriginal films dominating over anything new and different. I'm hoping the reason is Easter weekend. Families coming together with no time to see blood and guts, and with any luck Grindhouse will step up throughout the week and end up with strong result the following weekend.

Other new releases include The Reaping, which came in sixth place and Firehouse Dog, which took tenth.

I think Grindhouse will do well overall, but I think the real money will be made on DVD for this movie. I was ashocked when I heard that "Are we done yet?" beat them out, wow.
