As the summer approaches, better movies are being released. First up is Will Ferrell's latest comedy, Blades of Glory, which is about rival figure skaters who team together after they were both banned and disgraced from the sport. The reviews are mixed, but the overall consensus is that this film has only one joke and if you are familiar with Ferrell's movies, than you have seen this already.
For the kids is Disney's animated Meet the Robinsons, about a boy genius who creates a machine to recover the lost memory of the past and embarks on an adventure with his future family. This film has been praised by critics for being both fun and great looking, which is rare for Disney these days. According to reviews, adults will be impressed by the 3-D animation, while the kids will enjoy the entertaining characters and an overall solid story.
Lastly, The Lookout has come out with lots of buzz from the critics. It is being called a great thriller featuring a talented lead actor that accomplishes what it set out to do with deep characters and an exciting story.
There are also three movies in limited release, which might be playing at your local theater, but probably not. There is the re-released Peaceful Warrior, about a college student and world-champion athlete who discovers the true meaning of winning. The Academy Award-nominated After the Wedding stars the villain from Casino Royale, Mads Mikkelsen, as a manager of an orphanage in India who is sent to Denmark, where he discovers a life-altering family secret. Finally, Live Free or Die is also available. It is not the fourth installment of the Bruce Willis franchise, but a story of a pair of aspiring criminals who try to pull a job when things go horribly wrong.
Blades of Glory and Meet the Robinsons took first and second place this weekend, pushing all of last weeks' results down a few spots. The Will Ferrell comedy was able to earn $33 million, making back more than half of its $61 million budget. Disney's newest film was not far behind, bringing in $25.1 million, even with many other choices available for kids.
Surprisingly, 300 not only came in third, but was also able to beat TMNT, which was first last week, pushing the turtles to fourth spot. At this point 300 almost tripled its $65 million budget, earning a total of $180 million domestically.
Rounding out the top five were Wild Hogs, which was able to beat most of last week's releases like Shooter, Premonition, The Last Mimzy, The Hills Have Eyes 2, and Reign Over Me.
Unfortunately, The Lookout underperformed, earning only $2 million and taking 11th place. While the film was only available in 955 theaters, its per-theater earnings weren't enough to do any serious damage.
