This weekend there is something for everyone in theaters.
First up is the horror sequel The Hill Have Eyes 2, this time about a group of National Guard trainees who find themselves battling against a vicious band of mutants. The material shown in the film may be gory and violent, but I predict it will be devoid of any real scares just like the first one. As expected, this film was not screened for critics.
Also in theaters is Shooter, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Mark Wahlberg in this government conspiracy thriller. The movie is being compared to Rambo, and not in a good way, but in the fact that there are lots of pointless gun battles and suspense. Doesn't sound so bad.
Now that we have a horror film and an action flick, we also get a drama, starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle, called Reign Over Me. In this film, Cheadle helps his former college roommate (Sandler) come to grips with losing his family on September 11th. The film is being enjoyed by critics, commenting on the great performances by the two actors which makes up for the rather slow paced story.
Finally, there are three 'PG' movies out, with TMNT chief among them. According to critics, this film ended up missing many factors that made the old movies and cartoons so great. While the reviews say there is tons of action and excitement, there is little wit or humor, which the turtles are known for. Kids will probably still love this movie, even though most of them have never heard of the characters.
Competing against the turtles is also The Last Mimzy, about two siblings who begin to develop special talents after they find a mysterious box of toys. Here is a movie that kids and parents might enjoy, but early reviews have complained about its unfocused and overly ambitious storyline.
Also in competition for your kid's money is Pride, starring Terrence Howard. The film is your average underdog story, only this time it deals with the sport of swimming. It is a story of how a man (Howard) turned a group of troubled teens into Philadelphia's first African-American swim team. The film looks like it has a few great things going for it, most notably the stellar cast, but is still a story we have seen many times before. I doubt it will be anything special.
In limited release comes First Snow, starring Guy Pearce, about a man desperately trying to alter his future after a fortune teller makes a frightening prediction.
Also in limited release is the true story of a man who bluffed his way into London's high society by pretending to be Stanley Kubrick. The film is entitled Color Me Kubrick and stars John Malkovich. If you don't feel like seeing this movie in theaters, it is strangely coming out on DVD on March 27th. Rather quick, don't you think?
After dominating the box office for two weeks straight, 300 was finally knocked from the top spot by another group of warriors. TMNT opened in 170 less theaters than 300, but the PG movie was still able to bring in $25.5 million. 300 coming in second place, earned $20.5 million, taking in a total of $162.3 million domestically during its three weeks in theaters.
Mark Wahlberg's Shooter took third place with $14.5 million, pushing Wild Hogs down to fourth. John Travolta's movie has now earned $123.8 million during its four weeks in theaters.
The Last Mimzy got a boost on Saturday to take the fifth spot this weekend, earning $10.2 million. Surprisingly The Hills Have Eyes 2 underperformed by taking seventh place, making it the second horror movie in a row to bring in less than expected. The other is Dead Silence.
