Library in Sahuarita?
Anna Griessel 133 weeks ago

No, there is not yet a library in Sahuarita, but there is a fabulous library in Green Valley, on La Canada and it's part of the Pima County Library System.

I have heard from many people in Sahuarita that they want to know more about the Joyner - Green Valley Library. I'm on the Board of Director of the Friends of the Library group there and so I thought I'd give some information. The board is happy to announce a number of opportunities for Sahuarita residents to get involved in voluteering on committes and projects at the library. In addition to volunteering in the used bookstore or other work in the Library we need members who have specific skills. Below is a list of current standing committees, their functions, skill sets needed and number of people making up the committee. Please review and if you find an area that fits your interests and skill sets please call the board member responsible for that committee and express your interest.

Newsletter Committee: (3)
Committee Board Chair: Anna Harrison Griessel 393-7489 or anna@wowcreative.tv
Anna will be moving out of the area this fall, so a chair and committee persons are needed: Writing, editing or photography skills/experience; familiarity with desktop computer publishing particularly useful.

Membership Committee: (2-4)
Committee Board Chair: Meg Ribotto at 648-3190 or pmribotto@aol.com
Skills helpful or needed: Familiarity with computer data base software valuable.

This committee is busiest January thru June when most new memberships are received. The role of this committee is to mail out membership letters in January and then document and track all new members/renewals/life memberships each year. The chairperson also needs assistance with transportation and logistics of labeling and purchasing of supplies. This group is also responsible for the mailing of the postcard announcements of the Friends annual meeting.

Scholarship Committee: (3)
Committee Board Chair: Clair Gardner, 625-0284 or clabar@cox.net

This committee reviews all candidates requesting scholarship funds for studies in the graduate UA Library Science program. They evaluate applications along with transcripts, meet and interview each candidate of interest and present their recommendations to the board for final approval. Our own librarian, Amber Mathewson, is a former recipient of this scholarship.

Program/Publicity (3-4)
Committee Board Chair (past): Ron Brill, 398-5081 or rbrill@earthlink.net

New members are needed for both the program and publicity functions. Publicity: Background in news release writing, publicity or advertising is needed. Also needed is a person to help develop posters to promote Library public events. Committee members work with the Library staff in placing newspaper ads for public programs utilizing the Friends paid advertising budget. Graphic design experience is helpful.
Programs: Seek those who are interested in organizing and promoting free Friends public programs. Volunteers are also needed to help plan a community event this fall celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Friends organization and completion of the Green Valley Library building.

Bookstore Management and Training Committee: (3)
Committee Board Chair: Margorie Smith at 648-3815 or email marjcws@yahoo.com.
Committee members are needed who have good organization skills and experience working in a retail sales environment and/or managing volunteers.

This committee oversees the everyday function of the Friends of the Library Used Bookstore. This includes scheduling and training of bookstore volunteer staff and ensuring all volunteers have the bookstore volunteer schedule before the beginning of each month. Bookstore volunteers are also involved in helping to promote donations of books for sale in the bookstore, pricing of books and work with the book storage facility.

Finance: (1)

Skills needed: Understanding of balance sheet and basic accounting functions, banking, budgeting and check writing. PC financial records and reports experience is helpful. Tasks require having transportation to do banking and collect incoming mail from the Friends P.O. Box.

This committee is responsible for all monies going in and out of the Friends of the Library Board. They are responsible for the PO Box for the group, recording of all financial transactions, monthly report to the board. This committee works in liaison with the membership committee by forwarding new member information to the membership chairperson.

Other interests/skills to offer?
Those who have other types of interests, experience or skills that they are willing to share to help the Library Friends are encouraged to email board member Rhonda Porro at 398-7338 or rdporro@cox.net.

We appreciate all of our volunteers and especially are proud to have over 1400 members in the Friends of the Green Valley Library. We look forward to having more people involved in our exciting and rewarding work!

Hi Anna, thanks for the note about the Library. We here at the SahaStar.com have considered offering free tutorials on the Web site at the library to all who are interested. Do you know how many computers there are and if it's possible to schedule something like this? Perhaps you can direct me on who I would need to talk to. Thanks!

The library has a wonderful computer room. I'm sure of the exact numbers, but there are probably about 20 computers. Give a call to Amber Mathewson at Amber.Mathewson@tucsonaz.gov. She's the Branch Manager. Tell her we talked.
