FILM GURU: Opening this weekend (March 16th)

After impressing many horror fans with Saw, director James Wan is at it again. In Dead Silence, a man returns home searching for answers to his wife's mysterious murder, only to discover a deadly ancient curse. Don't expect much gore from this one, as Wan is aiming at not only to scare you, but also to creep you out. Dead Silence was not screened for film critics.

Also in theaters is Sandra Bullock's Premonition, a film about a housewife in a race against time and fate to save her husband from dying in a car crash. Reviews have been negative for this one, claiming that the story is slow and confusing.

The only other wide release is Chris Rock's next stab at directing feature films called I Think I Love My Wife. This one is said to be just like every other Rock film, riddled with bad jokes, poor acting, and in this case, incredibly melodramatic.

It seems like anything worth watching this weekend is in limited release. First up is The Wind That Shakes the Barley, starring Cillian Murphy. The story is set during the Irish Civil War in 1919, and is about two brothers who join Ireland's guerrilla armies formed to battle the British Black and Tan squads. This film won the coveted Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and has earned positive early reviews.

For a film that looks fun and clever, check out Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. The trailer alone intrigued me enough to want to go see this film about a would-be killer who idolizes cinema's greatest psycho-slashers.

Also in limited release is Nomad, which is set in 18th-century Kazakhstan, and is about a boy who feels destined to one day unite the three warring tribes of the region against foreign invaders.

Financially, it seems like it will be another 300 weekend.

According to ShowBIZ Data, 300 was able to maintain its dominance on Friday, bringing in an estimated $10.2 million. Even though that's a 64% drop-off from last Friday, it was enough to take first place, and also to break the $100 million mark.

New release Premonition, starring Sandra Bullock, earned $6.4 million during the one day, overtaking Wild Hogs which is in its third week.

Surprisingly, Dead Silence is underperforming, earning only $2.9 million on Friday, which will probably result in a $6 million weekend total.
