IRHS Interest: From the Heart

Once again, Ironwood Ridge High School has begun to sell paper shamrocks around campus. This fundraiser is not exclusive to the IRHS campus, but is taking place throughout all of the Amphitheater School District high schools.
The DECA club, sponsored by Mr. Jim Norby and Ms. Sara San Jule, is hosting this benefit activity. All proceeds will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association to help fight the inherited disease. DECA hopes to beat their all time record this year by raising $1,500 to help afflicted children all across the country.
Muscular Dystrophy is not just one disease, but a group of over 30 diseases all of which harm the skeletal muscles in the human body. These skeletal muscles control the body’s ability to move around, and their deterioration progressively causes weakness in the affected person. These effects can be mild, but in some cases cause the person to become completely immobile and confined to a bed or wheelchair. Some cases of MD can be apparent at infancy, while some do not show up until reaching middle age. Severity of Muscular Dystrophy depends on the individual case; some people can go through life with little trouble, while others become permanently disabled.
In order to get Ironwood Ridge students involved with this charity event, a competition has been set up among all of the participating high schools of Canyon del Oro, Amphitheater, and Ironwood Ridge. Whichever school sells the most shamrocks and creates the most creative display will win a free lunch for all DECA members.
The sale of shamrocks will be going on until the end of the year. Interested students can purchase a Shamrock in the Student Store. Green shamrocks are one dollar and gold shamrocks cost five. As an additional perk, pins will be available for students who support the cause, which say “I donated a dollar to MD.
