SAHUARITA IN THE MIDDLE: Taking a Stand III
L Cesare 119 weeks ago

Last week was almost uneventful. Richard did not comply with the uniformed dress code any day. He did however try to protest in a way that could not be looked upon as disruptive to the educational mission.

I say the week was almost uneventful because there was that one incident at open house. An employee of the school took the opportunity to smart off to me. I took it in stride as she regularly smarts off or yells at parents and students. After witnessing her antagonistic way of handling people last year, I decided I just wasn't up to the challenge of verbal combat. I sort of regret it because someone someday really needs to set her straight. I decided it would not be me but I would write a letter to be added to her employee file.

I don't mind people disagreeing with me. In fact, I had several really pleasant conversations with both parents and employees of the district on the subject of uniformed dress. Some tried to change my mind while others asked how they could help. But there will always be that one who has to yell and be disrespectful.

Since the school has taken no action against Richard, he has been allowed to focus his energy on the process of creating law. There is no law on the books regarding opt-out policy based on religious beliefs in Arizona. Richard is going to try to change that. He has looked up the opt-out laws of other states and is trying to write something for Arizona. He has written to politicians and found support there. Regardless of how it turns out it will be a great lesson in how the government works.
