Hi everyone, welcome to day 2 of SahuaritaStar.com. I was encouraged by the activity yesterday and I hope that those of you who stopped by liked what you saw and will continue to help us improve this community in the coming months and (cross your fingers) years.
After watching all of you interact with the site yesterday I noticed a few areas that seemed to trip everyone up. I am going to start a 'Tip of the Day' section where I will explain or highlight one feature of the site that may be a little unclear.
Today's tip is 'Tags'. Anyone who has poked around has probably seen these guys and a few of you have even taken a stab at tagging your blog posts and photos. But I wanted to emphasize how powerful this feature is and illuminate a few of the ways it can help you organize your posts and find other posts of interest.
For the uninitiated, a tag is essentially a label or a category. But the beauty is that instead of us restricting the categories you can post to - such as 'Sports' 'News' and 'Features' - YOU get to choose how you want to categorize your post.
For example, I'm going to give this post the tag 'tip-of-the-day' (NOTE: Multiword tags need to be separated by hyphens. Spaces create a new tag). I will tag the next one of these I write 'tip-of-the-day'. This will automatically link these two posts together. Any other Tip of the Day posts I make and tag appropriately will also get categorized with the previous posts. So by keeping my tags consistent I have essentially created a column for myself. To see what I mean, copy and paste the following URL into your browser: http://www.sahuaritastar.com/blog/tag/tipoftheday. You can even bookmark it for future reference.
You can do the same with all of your posts on a similar topic, or, what's really cool, is if you decide that you have a tip you'd like to provide you can tag YOUR post 'tip-of-the-day' and it will get added with my posts. Now we have a collective archive of community knowledge. The same goes for photos too.
Then you can use that funny looking chart on the blogs and the photos pages to find tags of interest. The tag chart organizes tags so that tags with more entries in them are larger than the tags with less entries. Scroll over a tag and you'll see what we mean - the number of entries in a tag will appear when you hover your mouse over it.
That's all for now. I'll talk more about tags in the future and be sure to ask questions in the comments area if you are unclear on anything. Talk to you soon!
